My fiancé and I do monthly stay cays from the kids and we try a new hotel in the area every time. The first time we staid, we paid $165 for a queen room and then had to pay a $100 deposit. The hotel and building itself is BEAUTIFUL! We were so excited to see what our room looked like. We walked in, and it was smaller than my dining room. It was 58 degrees in the room and the comforter was the thickness of the sheet on the bed. So let's just say we had two sheets on our bed. I attempted to put on a robe and it was itchy. We put the heater on and it took at least an hour to get the room up to a temperature that was suitable to be able to comfortable under our sheets. The bathroom looked as though it had not been cleaned in months. We couldn't shower without using a wash cloth to hold the door closed because it was broken. We attempted to make the best of it still. The bed was comfortable and the pillows were awesome, I will say that. The staff were very friendly as well. The following morning, there was a knock on the door at 9am. House keeping checking to see if we had checked out. It woke us up on a Sunday morning on our stay cay. We tried to get back to sleep and again at 9:30ish another knock... housekeeping. We decided to go down to breakfast. Breakfast was great. Food was good and atmosphere enjoyable. We still had plenty of time to go back to our room to rest. Check out wasn't until 12pm. 10:45am... knocking again.. housekeeping... 11:30am... another knock... housekeeping... We left...I called and spoke to the manager. I was just hoping to let him in on a few things that would have been a much nicer stay. Being that we have been to other hotels that were MUCH nicer rooms and a lot cheaper and no $100 deposit for a room that was already broken and dirty. He offered another try and a free meal. I was hesitant, because I couldn't see how the room could be any different , but he promised that it would be better because he "upgraded our stay." Our upgrade was to a king room.. not too much bigger than the queen. Just extended to fit the king bed. The door closed to the shower this time, but the shower door was full of film and the floors had not been swept in a long time. We went down to dinner, the crab cakes tasted like Iodine (I grew up on the coast eating fresh crab, and this was NOT it) I ended up getting shrimp and grits and it tasted fine, my fiancé got the filet and it was raw and purple and didn't smell well at all. He then tried the scallops and those were raw. Nothing was seasoned well at all. The drinks were really good though. So there's that. I wanted this to be somewhere that we would continue to go to, considering that it is beautiful on the outside and inside (besides that actual hotel rooms themselves) I'm hoping the dinner was just a fluke and the chef was having an off night, because normally, it's pretty good. But as far as staying at The White House as a hotel, I would never again. Not even for a wedding because I can't imagine how much that cost for the quality of the...
Read moreOverall, our stay was comfortable and uneventful, but a few things just didn’t sit well with me. I chose not to address them with the hotel staff, mainly because we were tired and it just wasn’t worth the effort. For the price we paid, we were satisfied. A room change may have made a difference.||We had booked a “neighborhood view” room, but when we checked in the woman at the front desk (very pleasant) offered us an upgrade to a “beach view.” Of course we said, “sure!” We were placed in Room 114, which is at the very far reaches of the first floor, and literally looks right out at the swimming pool, including lounges not eight feet from our window, There was no way we were going to leave our curtain open, as any passerby would have a clear view right into our room. The other window (it’s a corner room) overlooks a side street and a residence, and the same issue applies. So, we kept the curtains pulled and the room dark.||Our room was small - it is, after all, a renovated 1800’s hotel - but that was not at issue. It was sparsely furnished, and had only one bedside stand, so I had no place to put my phone if I wanted it nearby except on the windowsill. WiFi at that end of the hotel was quite weak, and frequently lost the signal.||Finally, the room’s flooring was a “wood-look” ceramic tile. I suppose that is a good choice for a beach-front hotel (sand and all that), but it smacks of an economy hotel rather than the luxury experience I was expecting. ||The real redeeming part of our stay was Cora’s restaurant. The service was impeccable (we ate early, and the restaurant was near empty); our waiters, Michael and Sydney, were friendly and attentive without being overbearing; and the food was exceptional. It was not cheap; two cocktails, two entrees, and a shared dessert totaled over $120 after tax and tip, but still. My wife enjoyed her trout meunière over roasted Brussels sprouts, while I had a Dijon mustard pork chop over collard greens with andouille sausage, served with a most excellent focaccia to begin.||I might stay at the White House Hotel again, but I would not hesitate to eat at Cora’s again if I...
Read moreWe really had high hopes for this hotel. The accommodations were pretty average. I had thought that they may have leaned into the rich history of the hotel and area in the decor. Any personality and uniqueness portrayed by the exterior was lost in the rooms. In our first room the bedside lamps were falling apart and the dresser/tv stand was undersized. We upgraded to a larger room the next night but still felt the furnishings lacked the quality expected for the hotel. The shower renovation was honestly just poorly executed. The bottom floor of the shower was unevenly grouted which led to exposed sharp edges of the river rock finish. The rest of tile surround was improperly grouted and sealed. In the corners, grout was actually missing which allowed water to pour down behind the wall of the shower. The beds in both rooms were firm but serviceable. By far the most disappointing aspect of our stay was the pool. I had held out hope that the pool would be the one thing that would save the stay but it too was in a similarly poor state. The hot tub was neither hot nor did it have enough water in it to properly function. The water level was so low that the jets were exposed and operating more as fountains. The hot tub and pool were very dirty. Aside from numerous stains there was an accumulation of dirt and gravel at the bottom. Finally the tile grout around the entire perimeter of the pool was caked in algae. The pool and hot tub were clearly poorly maintained for a long period of time. When we brought the issues to the attention of hotel staff we were given $30 off our bill but assured there was no issue with maintenance or the shower. Sadly I think any of the nearby casinos would have provided a far better experience. Although the White House looks beautiful from the outside it has all the hallmarks of cheap flip that is poorly maintained. We unfortunately won't...
