So my family and I finally dined in on our much anticipated chubbs visit. We arrived for our 3pm reservation on sunday expecting a lunch or dinner menu and instead received the brunch menu. BRUNCH erghhh which i cannot stand for a number of reasons I will save for another time. We asked for an order of elote or street corn which was not available at 3pm. No street corn at 3pm in a Mexican restaurant? I know i know cue the violins but doesnt everyone deserve the choice to order street corn from an up and coming mexican restaurant at 3pm? So we ordered the guacamole and chips to start. Recipe was with seasoning and mashed chunks of avacado my family enjoyed very much. We could have used more chips for a family of 4 but the guacamole was simple but very good. 2nd course not so much. The main dishes were dropped 3 chips into the guacamole even though it was ordered after the appetizer selection. This indicated to me a quick turn around policy. My daughter devoured her chubbs wings and enjoyed them with the dry rub plain. The tacos on the other hand were beneath my expectation. My wife ordered the drunken fish taco and the shrimp taco. The coconut shrimp taco appeared with a vibrant mango salsa and charred aolie which was balanced well and tasty. The fish taco on the other hand appeared with a pineapple salsa and an over pour of pickled red onion which did not taste fresh and quite chewy and the onion over powered all flavor. I, myself as a vegetarian ordered the cauliflower taco which was cleary an afterthought. The cauliflower at first glance appeared charred but then I realized it was over cooked and dry and the taco was plain ugly. No brightness with a slaw or fruit salsa to chear it up or offer acidity. The taco had a jalepeno salso under the cauliflower that tasted more like a flavorless salsa verde which seperated and tasted old. It lacked flavor, heat, acid, spice...you name it. Such an after though for vegetarians. It tried to hide behind the queso instead. They missed an opportunity to showcase a real seasonal fruit/spice pairing as cauliflower serves as an excellent vessel for flavor. We paired our courses with alcohol drinks. I asked for the server to replace plain tequila with mezcal as all posted drinks paired with an overly fruity and frozen option which again I see as an opportunity missed as mezcal can be mixed easily with a simple fruit syrup to enhance food. But the server happily adapted my margarita to include mezcal which was tasty but lacking in booze. My wife ordered the expresso martini which was delicious with heavy hints of cinnamon but watered down with coffee and not coffee liquors. We finished our meal with churo bites since dessert was not offered at our 3pm brunch session. The bites were accompanied with a delicious chocolate sauce, strawberries and whipped cream. The bites on the otherhand were served at varying degrees of edibility. Some were hard and overcooked some chewy. But the choux pastry itself had potential. My server herself was great checking on us but the service delivery was lacking at owners training i assume. Over all impression was mediocre at best. I expected more from a former food truck owner. Over all feeling...if I can do it better at home i will venture somewhere else even if it mean leaving the neighborhood. I suggest cutting the menu and seeking perfection. And keep in mind "brunch" is for special occasions, yuppies and rich people. Chubbs needs to figure out its identity (who are you catering to?) or it will be...
Read moreWe are tourists from Canada and visited here around 9 pm on Friday, June 13th after our long drive to get to Boston. The atmosphere was quite cute for a sports bar, and the live plants all around was very pretty. The greeter was very kind and host sat us in a nice booth. My friend and I ordered a margarita each, and we both asked for a salt rim (it came with it but we just wanted to be sure). The server seemed quite indifferent to us but whatever.
When the drinks arrive, one obviously had a salt rim and the other did not. So I asked for just some salt on the side to season my own because I did not want to be annoying. The server huffed a bit but said that it’s easier for them to remake the whole drink in a new glass instead so she took it and asked if we wanted any food. We said no thank you, just here for a drink.
Well her indifferent mood went south very fast after that. I don’t know if she was having a bad day or what but after this she was very icy and curt, maybe ten minutes later she says “here” and plops down my new margarita and quickly left. Let me tell you, the amount of salt in the rim was diabolical, like an inch thick of salt on inside and outside of the glass. Some chunks must have fallen off into the drink itself because it was sooo salty I had to keep cutting it with water.
My friend tried mine and confirmed that it was wayyy saltier than hers. I considered requesting a new one but our waiter never came back to check in with us and after such a long day I couldn’t have been bothered to ask for another one if this is what I got when asking politely. My friend is the one who likes margaritas the most anyways so if she got a good drink then I would take the hit.
We had to flag her down after we were done and we had cash ready to pay. Even though I did not seem busy (idk what her table load was like though) she took another 10 mins to come back with the bill. We asked for just 5$ in change which meant that we’d be giving her like an 18% tip, and yet she remained super cold/annoyed and she took another 5-10 minutes before coming back with the change.
It was just such a bizarre interaction, and maybe it’s the culture shock but it really rumpled our feathers. I know I should have said more at the time but like what an absolutely awful example of customer service.
From the reviews and the attitudes of every other worker I think we just got unlucky with whatever state the server was in for our visit. I guess my advice would be to make sure your order is more than 20$ USD each to get...
Read moreCame here for lunch with my lady on a lovely Saturday. It was empty (with the exception of 1 other table) which was fine but I was a bit curious why. We ordered and the food took a bit longer than expected for being the only ones there. The food arrived and it looked solid but as we ate, we became more and more displeased. The chicken & waffles came with a measly 3 small pieces of fried chicken and 1.5 pieces of a whole waffle. The butter was cold and didn’t melt onto the food at all. You’d expect more for $19. If you wanted chicken & waffles, you’d be better off at Lucy’s right down the street. The chilaquiles was underwhelming as well. Lots of chips, but not a lot of meat to accompany. Finally, the churro bites were far below average. You’d expect nothing but pleasure out of such a dish but the churro balls were very overcooked and hard as a rock. My lady and I made the same 😖 face when we took a bite. There were also so few fruits to go along with it topping a giant slop of whipped cream, you’d think they were rationing the fruits and meat in a recession. In the end we felt a bit gross with the amount of carbs and fat we ate as well as lack of protein to balance. The restaurant played a strange mix of abnoxious 80s hits and top 40 from the last 20 years with some Latin artwork on the wall to give the illusion it was a Mexican restaurant. Chubbs is the epitome of an American-owned “Latin” restaurant. Nothing about it felt original or authentic. Service was normal at least but nothing I would say exceeds...
