My overall grade for Lucky's is: C
I'm a huge fan of bakeries and will travel a decent distance to get to a great bakery. Especially, the bakeries that might have great French baked goods (croissants of all types, etc).
My visit was on a Sunday morning at 9:30 AM. This seemed to be prime time to get the freshest and best baked good from a local hand crafted bakery. As I walked in, the folks were actually kneading dough and getting stuff into the ovens. I got very excited.
The variety of items was fantastic, which made my visit all the tougher to decide on what to buy. We were visiting a friend who lives in Boulder and wanted to surprise them with a great Sunday morning. They provide the coffee, we provide the yummy stuff.
Croissants, Almond croissant, and about 9 or 10 other types of items were purchased. Sticky buns, doughnuts, crullers, etc.
They all looked fantastic.
We got to my friend's house and began to ceremoniously cut each item into quarters because there was 4 of us.
If we had only this experience with a single item, that may have been fine, but in the end - we all agreed that almost all of the items tasted and felt like they were a day old.
I do know that bakeries sell things like day-old bagels, etc and put them on a shelf at a discount and clearly mark them day-old. No worries there.
What we purchased were clearly and prominently on the front glass shelves right behind all the busy workers. So, my expectation is/was that they were fresh baked good. Unfortunately, they were not.
Flavors - were mostly all on point. Very good quality, it's just that they were "hard", like day-old doughnuts & pastries.
Therefore, next time we drive from Chicago to Boulder to visit our friends, it looks like we'll try to find another bakery where we can purchase fresh items. If I were you, I would pass unless they specifically tell you that their items are fresh out of the over at least that...
Read moreI am posting this with the best intentions. I really appreciate well executed food and baked goods. I live near this bakery and historically have gone here a lot. I used to always look forward to it. Now, I much prefer Dry Storage. Luckys quality seems to have changed. Everything tastes more sugary and the flour quality seems poorer now. Textures are off. Things crumble and fall apart in a bad way. Every time I try a GF item I’m very underwhelmed. They usually look good but then sort of fall apart and taste poor. Pretty poor selection of fully vegan things as well. My vegan friend from SoCal are always underwhelmed. Listen, you have an opportunity. To restore quality. Pair down your selection. Focus on quality over quantity like dry storage does. Use only the best ingredients. Get some truly good recipes for GF and vegan items. After all, you’re in Boulder. You need to execute on those things. Use heirloom grains. Trust me. People will pay for quality. Luckys, I hope I’m right that it’s just a matter of better ingredients , pairing down your offerings, and executing on baking like I know you can. Also, offer more savory things and for gods sake, make some...
Read moreWe hired Lucky's Bakehouse for our cake for our January wedding. When we went and taste tested, everything tasted and looked amazing. We were so relieved to find a place and excited for our cake on our wedding day. However, when our coordinator when to pick up our cake it looked completely wrong. I had asked for a simple one tier round cake, lemon flavored with a white swirled textured frosting. I watched the gal who took our order write this down, draw a picture, and I signed for it. The cake they tried to give our coordinator was bright yellow with bright blue and yellow edible floral on top. I'm not sure what happened in between that day and our wedding day. The bakery did give our coordinator another cake baked that morning and decorated it in the fashion I had asked for. However this cake was flavorless. The original cake they tried to give us was not any better, oversaturated with poppy seeds. I would book this bakery with caution and triple check your order as your event day...
