[updated] BAD FOOD. I am very confused by the ratings of this place and the diner's definition of authentic (I fear the majority who visit have not had the luxury of good Mexican food). I visited on 3/5/17 - a Sunday. The place was packed when we arrived.
Best Mexican(ish) restaurants I have found in the Boston area (after years of disappointments) are (1) Loco Taqueria & Oyster Bar & (2) Lone Star Taco Bar. There are some other recommendations that I have not yet visited and lunch spots that are killer, but geez, they are few and far between. I have tried many, but this one was by far the WORST. As I said, the food is NOT MEXICAN, but hey I could still enjoy a dish if it were cooked well. Food is bland, unseasoned, microwaved, canned sauces, etc. No exaggeration. My wife and I were extremely disappointed.
I was risky, and ordered one of the harder dishes to execute, the Mole Enchilada. I had to scrape off every remnant of the mole and scarfed down the rest. The chicken (which was dry and had not one other visible ingredient inside) was another dissapointment.
My wife got the shrimp tacos. Shrimp tasted old or frozen. Oh yeah, and not one of the four tacos could even be lifted off the plate. The single corn tortilla surrounding each taco was already falling apart, the moment the plate touched our table. Again flavors were bland.
The bartender made my wife and I a margarita that was diluted with a mix, that we specifically asked not to have (our request: Tequilla, Lime, Agave - nothing else). We voiced our concerns with our server who was as accommodating as one could be in such a situation. Even after explaining that our drinks were not what we had requested, the server stated the drinks were made to our order. I remained appalled that the bartender expected me to believe that what I asked for was what he had made - he straight up lied to the customer. C'mon, I know my Margaritas!!!
For our troubles our server gave us a free dessert. The flan was the only thing worth our time (hold the store bought chips, yummy salsas, and the decent guacamole). However, we still scraped off a raspberry syrup, a chocolate syrup, and a pile of canned syrupy fruit off the top of the Flan. WOW, just WOW. FYI, this is not how a Flan is served.
I will never return, and I hope you...
Read moreWent here in March 2021 I gotta say the 3 stars go to the so authentic and delicious food it has!
When we entered the place there was a server doing silverware and that’s it in a Sunday night, it took him like 5 minutes to realize my friend and I were behind him, it wasn’t until I entered the bar he even said hi and led us to a table. When we entered there were like 3 tables dirty and three more eating already. The ambience was really nice though, pretty nice decoration. The really bad thing was the service which I literally give 1/2 star, our server was a lady and she wasn’t friendly or asked if it was our first time, didn’t ask if we had questions about the menu or made any suggestions, (supposedly they close at 10 pm but at 9.45 pm they already turned off the music and some lights even with 2 tables and drinks), we asked for spoons and never came until I asked again and we got only one, then for waters she forgot, anyways we ordered drinks; white sangria and michelada, the michelada was 5/5 but the sangria was 1/5, way too sweet, I had to return it because I couldn’t drink it. Instead I got a Merlot which is the one you see in picture, the amount I got is just what you see in the picture not more not half. I gotta say food was PERFECT Guacamole was interestingly well priced for its sized, the appetizer arrived like in 15 mins and was a shrimp ceviche it was more than perfect, and our main course was a Molcajete, which was very very tasty! The Mexican rice was on its point, pico de Gallo was fresh and corn tortillas were very warm. Completely recommended for food! I gotta say that I’ll return I give it another chance because of its awesome food, maybe the server just had a long day or wasn’t...
Read moreI ordered takeout from here for Mother's Day. I ate here once before when it was still called Viola. I would say the food is definitely better now. Although the food was good, I had to deduct a star because I was ignored for a good 5-7 minutes as I stood at the front waiting for someone to acknowledge that I was standing there. Workers continuously looked at then walked right by me, never asking if I had already been helped. Finally someone came out and asked for my name and brought out my order.
I ordered the quesadillas and my mother had the fajitas. Those 2 plus a small side order of rice and french fries with some chips and salsa came to $54. Kinda pricey. We were disappointed with the portion size at first look but were surprisingly full after we were done eating. My quesadilla was good, a little soggy though. My mother's fajita came with a tortilla bowl of black bean paste, the tortilla was stale. The chips tasted fresh and warm. A handful of french fries for $3 seemed a bit overpriced.
It's very tight in this restaurant. The patrons were seated very close together and there was only a thin glass partition separating some tables. If we ate there, it definitely would've been outside. In these covid times I wouldn't want to sit that close to a bunch of strangers.
Overall while the food was good and made us full, I'd say this place should work on their customer service. It's never nice when you take the time to drive to an establishment and you're treated like you're invisible. Especially when the phone rings and the customer who DIDN'T appear in person is getting assisted...
