I saw a sign out near the road advertising “fish & chips”. I love fish and chips but I have given up getting anything other than prepackaged frozen fish blocks and undercooked fries every time I order it these days. If they cared enough to put out a sign, maybe this time it might be different.
It was! The fish was just right and the fries were fresh cut. The tarter sauce was homemade and tasty.
I had the pleasure of speaking to the owner to complement her on the quality of the food. She let me know they make everything in their kitchen. Even the bacon is smoked on site.
I also have a passion for New England Clam Chowder. I have ordered NECC in 100’s of restaurants. This was the best I have had the pleasure to enjoy. Not muddy, not watery, actually has clams in it and hand cut potatoes. Perfect.
So, after passing two of my most critical tests I pulled out the final test in my search for my favorite restaurant, Banana Cream Pie. I told her if they had that, my searching days were over. She not only told me the had BCP, but her mom does all the deserts and they are made fresh every day! I think my heart skipped a beat. She brought me a slice and it too was excellent.
I am hooked for good and have yet to get anything on the menu (working my way through it) that wasn’t delicious and obviously made in their kitchen.
Now for the only downside. They have limited hours so be sure to make sure they are open before you go. Secondly, if fancy decorations and plush surroundings are your thing, this is not for you. This is where you go when your priority is great food. It’s not particularly cheap either but with food quality this high the price is very reasonable. They have a full bar if you want to enjoy an adult beverage with your meal.
If you know the difference between packaged frozen commercially prepared food and the real stuff, you won’t be disappointed.

They have reopened their salad bar and offer an all you eat soup and salad bar for $14. The salad bar items are actually prepared at the restaurant. The dressings are fresh, the cole slaw is fresh, and the soups are fantastic. The New England clam chowder remains one of the best. The mushroom soup is excellent.
There is nothing better than freshly prepared food using fresh ingredients and unique recipes. I’m so tired of being served the same prepackaged foods at many restaurants and nothing they make here will...
Read moreAlthough I have only been twice, everything I have tried, and what those I went with picked has been phenomenal. I am very picky about eating out, since I make everything at home from scratch normally, and my partner worked as a cook for years, so out standards are high. We can tell the extra lengths the cook goes to with his dishes, soups, mains, desserts, even the breads and croutons. Though some dishes take time to come out, in this case it is obviously because the dish was literally just prepared.
The calamari is fantastic, and have a lovely pairing, such as I usually only see at "fancier" restaurants. And I love calamari, so to have such obviously fresh seafood in a small town in Michigan is awesome!
I got the ribeye once, and this is literally the only place I have ever truly enjoyed one. It was cooked properly, and I deeply appreciate the fact that it was not charred black all over like all other places do. Those red skins on the side were surprisingly delicious rather than just plain potatoes.
This time I got the chef's special, the shrimp gnocchi. Amazing sauce, so well spiced. The shrimp were lovely quality, with a rich red color.
We shared a slice of pie, and I suppose it was a mousse, so light in texture, while also being rich and flavorful. Always a favorite of mine.
The plating of the dessert and main dishes ways also a bit fancier than expected from what looks to be a fish and chips place (which I imagine are also delicious).
While it is somewhat pricey, maybe more so compared to the local options, it is more than worth it. The servings have been generous, and the quality really is top notch. I am veryuch looking forward to seeing what new specials might be created in the future. The servers are also very friendly and helpful.
Truly this is the only place we eat out locally, and is easily on par with top restaurants in Ann Arbor or Traverse City. I am so relieved to have such a close place to get healthy, homemade food, for those days I haven't the energy to cook;...
Read moreFirst time visiting this place (came up on a Google search for “food near me” after a day hike at the Holly Rec Area - wasn’t familiar with it prior to) & have already been taking about when we can make it back.
Had the smoked brisket French dip; hubby had a lemon-dill seafood dish (shrimp, salmon, & mahi mahi); kids both had a chicken tender platter; & we shared the fried pickle appetizer.
Food was phenomenal. I’m very picky about my meats (and was worried I might regret my choice, as I’ve had similar sandwiches at other restaurants, and there is always more fat than meat in the shredded brisket I tend to be served) but this was pure meat. The aus jus was very flavorful. Even the seasoning on the (hand cut) French fries was amazing! The kids’ chicken tenders was like none I’ve seen. It’s clearly freshly cut & the fry batter was on point. Hubby enjoyed the seafood dish (though I hadn’t tasted it myself).
Additionally, the service was fantastic. The owner visited the table multiple times (and even brought the kids free chicken noodle soups - which I did have to sample of course, and will definitely be ordering it for myself the next time!). It’s evident that he loves what he does and takes a lot of pride in the food he serves - not to mention, that he just seemed so happy & jovial, that it just rubbed right off on you!
I do have one single regret, however. While I was wholly stuffed, I had every intention of ordering a piece of tiramisu & a cannoli to go (since I find both hard to come across at restaurants AND I seen that they were noted to be homemade), and in the midst of my food coma, I totally forgot until after the bill came & would have felt bad asking for them at that point. While I’m kicking myself now, it’s just another reason to get back out that way in the...
