After eating lunch at The Hornet's Nest for the first time today, I can honestly say that I will not be returning. When we walked in, there was a younger woman with a scowl on her face at the counter. We walked up, and waited for her to say something to us signaling she was ready to take our order. Instead, she was counting tip money, and gossiping with the kitchen staff very loudly. After about a minute, she asked us what we wanted in a very annoyed tone. In the middle of my sentence, she turned her head and started talking to another co worker and laughing. How rude is that?! We were so tempted to take our money elsewhere but decided to stick it out after all the raving reviews we read about the food quality. After a long wait, our food was finally ready. When we got it, we weren't impressed. Not to mention, we both asked for no tomatoes and received them on our sandwiches. The bread was VERY soggy, and there was barely any avocado on my #21 sandwich. My fiancé and I only ate half of our sandwiches, and as we were walking out the owner stopped us and asked very loudly if the food was good and if we wanted to take our other halves to go. We said no thank you and kept walking. It was a little weird to be stopped literally as we opened the door, and felt ingenuine. Overall it was just a very unwelcoming experience, and just plain strange. The food is NOT...
Read moreStopped for breakfast after an early weekday appointment in Branford. It's bigger inside that it looks from the road, and had about 20 tables. They seem to be big supporters of the local high school sports teams, which I admire. The menu is on the chalkboard, but no prices. Order at the counter, and they bring the food to your table. We were shocked that the cost for two omelets and one cup of coffee in a diner was about $35.
Server brought food out reasonably quickly. Omelets came with toast and a side of homefries. Omelets were good, but far from great. The mountain of homefries may have been sitting under the heat lamps too long as they were hard, dried out and had a very thick layer of a salt/spice mixture that made them almost inedible. Overall, a decent breakfast, but I expected better quality...
Read moreHere is another first visit for us, Hornets Nest Deli in Branford. While driving from East Haven through Branford we came upon the Hornets Nest Deli. The parking which is more than adequate was loaded with vehicles at 1:10P.M. thats a good sign for me. So we stopped in, first impression everyone knows everyone, lots of conversations going on very clean and lots of seating. Then you look over to the side wall and see the menu, yikes , many options available panini, sub, sandwiches and wraps, not to mention a very large choice of salads. we settled on splitting a #21 sub, grilled chicken with avocado, bacon lettuce and tomato with a balsamic vinaigrette. PERFECT, fresh bread chicken done just right a great sub. Great menu, great food, great service and a friendly staff, what more could...
