My dear companion and I were on the road to horrible Houston, traveling through Kolache Country, and we picked this place for to stop in for a bite. I was keen on the place because it was supposedly something to do with traditional Czechoslovakian pastry, and I am supposedly something to do with Czechoslovakian genealogy. There is a wide variety of kolaches here, but nothing in the way of croissants without pork, much to MDC's chagrin. She ended up getting a plain croissant and used the handy Weikel's microwave to melt some Kraft cheese she got from the connected convenience store. That plus a little packet of mustard sufficed for her hood-rat croissant-eatin' arse. Well, that plus the cream cheese kolache she also got. I myself went for a traditional poppy-seed kolache and a cup of joe to boot. Poppy-seeds are seriously good and need to make a serious comeback. I was very pleased with both kolaches. The prices were also good, and I thought the service was great as well. The ladies were very informative about their selection, gave us some samples, and didn't seem to mind us taking our sweet time trying to decide. Also, I saw them give a local guy and his kiddo their order on the house because their credit card machine just happened to be down that day. I thought that was sweeter than a poppy-seed kolache. My dear companion, however, believes that this act of kindness had everything to do with the man being a white man. In contrast, my dear brown out-of-town companion said she got some kind of guff from one of the older ladies who was working at Weikel's. I didn't observe this myself, but that's just the thing: we whites are somewhat blind to some things because all of this white fluorescent light around us blinds us. For this reason, I think yellow incandescents seriously need to make a comeback. As for my dear companion and I, we won't come back to Weikel's Bakery, but only because it is very inconveniently located for us along the road to Houston, and we just can't help but hate H-town.

My twice-monthly trip to Austin has me driving by twice each trip. This time I was coming home from a celebration weekend, not wanting it to stop, so I thought I'd stop and see what kind of sweet treats I could find. My visit was late afternoon on a Sunday, so pickings were understandably slim, but I was able to get a 6pk of my fave danishes. There were plenty of other options, but my sweet tooth was kinda specific this trip. They had a couple different kinds of giant, fluffy, sticky, gooey cinnamon rolls that looked fantastic, and there were some danishes with some fancy seasonal flavors that looked enticing. I ended up with the classics, though - cheese, cherry, and lemon. They are perfectly sweet, moist and delicious, and I am certain I will be back again on one of my future trips. 6pk of danishes was $9 and some change. For fresh and yummy treats like that it was absolutely worth the stop! It wasn't too busy while I was there. Only a few minutes of waiting in line. The storefront was clean and tidy. The staff I spoke with were pleasant. It was a good visit and I'd definitely recommend a stop by to see what you can find! (Though, maybe try a bit earlier in the day. I bet they have some amazing morning options!)

My first visit was on Thursday afternoon, and although there was only one person working, she was super nice and super helpful. She made me a ham and provolone cheese wrap with all the veggies, heavy onions, heavy mayo, heck I ain’t kissing on anyone so why not! That wrap was so good! I came too late to get any of their signature Kolaches but I was able to get three cowboy cookies, a lemon square, banana walnut bread, apricot bread, and a German chocolate cake… don’t talk about me being a big back! Everything was phenomenal! Passing back through I did have a cheesecake Kolache, an apricot Kolache, and a ham and cheese Kolache. OMG! They all were so good. Lastly, I stocked up on their canned goods. I got me some canned peaches, canned okra, canned squash, canned quail eggs, and some hot chow chow. If the end of times are amongst us, I wanna go back in stock up on more of their canned goods! I haven’t eaten them yet, but they look amazing! I will be back!
