TLDR: Significantly overpriced, frustratingly small portion sizes. All else good.
To the owner: Please either reduce prices or increase portion size. College students will not come here, nor will most residents in this part of Massachusetts. It is too expensive for what is served.
I am a BSU student and assumed that this restaurant would be targeting the college population in town. I went here with my girlfriend and two of our friends for dinner.
The server was kind, fast, and knowledgeable, the decor and ambiance were first rate--both seemed like good signs for the food to come. Upon looking at the menu, I was struck by the prices of the food. As this was our first time here, we ordered what we wanted and decided to eat the extra cost for the sake of having a good first experience. High prices are annoying, but I expected top quality and generous portions based on my first impressions of the restaurant.
My girlfriend and her friend both ordered margaritas ($14) and we ordered street corn (do not recall price), both of which came out first. For four people, I remember the street corn as being reasonably priced and appropriate in size, also the quality was fantastic. For my girlfriend's margarita, however, not more than 6oz of actual drink was contained. The glass was small, filled completely with ice, and was a weak pour. Our friend's margarita appeared similar, she was also unhappy.
When our food came out, the same issue with poor value and average quality persisted. 3/4 of us ordered tacos of differing varieties, with my girlfriend ordering the Carne Asada. For the three of us with tacos ($19 if I remember correctly), the price seemed reasonable but the portions were dreadfully small. Each tortilla--while delicious itself--was very small (maybe 4"?). The contents of each taco fit very comfortably within said tiny tortilla. For a dinner entree, one would expect a filling amount of food to be served. The tacos were closer in size to average appetizers than to an entree. My girlfriend's carne asada (do not recall price, was reasonable though) was an appropriate portion size, but the quality of the meat itself was poor. Seasonings and spices were hard to distinguish--there were almost none. I would liken the carne more to a nicely-cooked steak than to the cuisine style Casa Agave Cantina serves.
Overall, the margaritas and tacos are small and way overpriced. The street corn was excellent. The carne was decently portioned, but arguably not traditional carne asada. If you don't mind Boston prices for slightly better than average ethnic cuisine, then this is...
Read moreSome of the best Mexican food i've had! Place is very nicely appointed and rustic looking, decent size bar with usual Mexican drink selections. Service was very prompt and friendly, menu is somewhat small but to be honest it covers most bases (except no salsa yet, still working on it!) and being small means what they do offer is made with a lot of care and attention to detail. We had short rib empanada's for an app and so glad we did, delicious lightly fried, crispy, yet chewy dough with an amazing short rib filling served with a side of green "relish" type dipping sauce that was a perfect accompaniment. I want to buy that by the jar. Couldn't decide on which taco's to get so we mixed it up a little. Taco dishes come with three taco's, you can't mix and match, however you can add a different taco than you order for your main for a small up-charge. The Taco's. Shrimp - insanely good, you get the sweetness of the pineapple salsa then just when you think it safe to go back in - BANG the heat hits you like a freight train, AWESOME!! Don't get me wrong they are not super hot but they have the exact right amount of spice to let you still enjoy the delicate shrimp, which by the way is so tender it must be ceviche "cooked" Carnita's has a wonderful taste that has some smokey aftertaste but also a hint of some spice that just works like nothing i've had in a carnitas taco. Brisket taco's were so tender, the beef was slow cooked and again, the spices were spot on. Chicken tinga were also spot on however i felt bad for them, it was impossible to follow the first three tacos we had tried LOL. This place is amazing, parking might be an issue on weekend nights as the lot is small but trust me, find parking...
Read moreCasa Agave has a great look—I’ll give it that. The decor is vibrant, the art is beautiful, and it really feels like a fun, cozy spot to grab dinner. Unfortunately, the food just didn’t live up to the aesthetics.
I ordered the carne asada and specifically asked for it without jalapeños, yet it came out overly spicy and still loaded with heat. The flavors were overpowering and not balanced at all. My wife ordered the shredded pork, and it was honestly a mess—over-seasoned and lacking any real depth of flavor. The empanada was about a 2/5, the Mexican corn was underwhelming, and the chicharrones (or “chi-ronis” as listed) were a complete fail—tasted like they were coated in generic store-bought seasoning.
The margarita flight was another disappointment. The concept was fun, but the execution was poor. Their house tequila overwhelmed every flavor in the flight—whether it was coconut or ginger, it was all just tequila with no nuance.
I was also surprised to see Italian and American items randomly scattered across a menu that claims to be authentic Mexican. It’s confusing and feels more like a college-town fusion diner than a thoughtfully curated dining experience.
The only things I genuinely liked were the mac & cheese (yes, that was good), the presentation of the carne asada, and our waitress—she was incredibly sweet and attentive.
Overall, I think Casa Agave might work for college students looking for an affordable night out with some flair, but for a foodie or anyone looking for true Mexican cuisine, this isn’t the place. One star—for the...
