I am in Brookhaven on a business trip for a few weeks. I have been asking around about good places to eat and Poppas kept being the name that came up most. After work today I decided to give it a try.
I was greeted quickly by a very polite young lady at the front. She quickly took me to my seat as I was dining alone. A waitress was swift to my table, very cordial, and got my drink order and explained a little about the buffet to me. Then off I went to the bar.
I started with a salad. While I think there should have been a bit more green in the salad, it seemed to be freshly cut and crisp. The “fixins” for any salad you wanted to make were readily available and fresh. Nothing was dried out and the salad was really good.
I went back to the bar for my main food and was pleased to see the assortment for the price. I tackled the fish and added my sides. The fish was awesome and freshly cooked. The sides were well prepared and the teammates were steadily bringing out more to refresh the bar. I feasted a couple of times and then had some desert.
Poppas lived up to the touting that others gave to me. While I am here, I plan on going back again and maybe add crab legs to my plate next time. I felt it was a great value for what was offered and to top it off, the atmosphere was laid back and home like , not like the feelings you get in a large chain restaurant.
To top off my night, another guy sat at the table next to me and was dining alone as I was. We had some good conversation as we ate. Thank you, Mr. Dunn for being friendly to someone from out of town and making me...

I was in Brookhaven on a business trip and I didn't want the standard chain-restaurant food. I happened to drive by this restaurant and noticed the parking lot right in front was bustling with activity. Families were making their way in and out which is always a good sign. I went in and from the minute I stepped up to the podium the staff was inviting, attentive, and friendly. They genuinely liked being there and it showed. The salad bar had a fresh assortment. It was clean and well stocked. There was also slaw and at least 5 or 6 prepared salads. The only drawback was no Lite Ranch but in a buffet, go big or go home. On the main bar there was fried catfish, very good fried chicken, black eyed peas, corn on the cob, greens, boiled shrimp, gumbo, basically a great mix of southern, soul, and cajun food. They offered at least 6 breads with two being differeent versions of cornbread. The desserts were amazing they had numerous pies, soft serve, and even some sugarfree pies that were delicious. If you find yourself in the area and you're tired of chicken strips and club sandwiches this restaurant is worth seeking out. Personally I will make sure to travel through this area again and skip lunch so I can maximize my...
