Not the best experience. Came in town to visit family and headed to this location. Paid $9.5 (NOT including tax, nor tip) for a 16oz coffee. Not too opposed to paying this amount for a nostalgic cup of joe, but this was sweet and blah. I went with the intention of ordering their hazelnut praline as seen on their website just to told that neither of their locations have it yet. Ok, so I ordered another one, don’t recall the name because I didn’t go with the intention of ordering anything else and was provided a suggestion. Upon serving, I was handed my cup, and it felt lukewarm. It was as if they prepared the latte and added very cold oat milk. A privately owned coffee shop should have a true barista and people who can answer questions on the whim, not some young person taking an order who couldn’t confidently answer my questions. She would look back at times for assurance that she answered correctly or when she was being corrected. The coffee was mediocre and upon first sip it was definitely lukewarm, not even a bit of heat to the lips or palate. A bit too sweet for more liking and couldn’t even taste the espresso. I got home and added another shot of because that latte was the pits. I’m not a big fan of Starbucks, but I headed over there the next day and received a really great...
Read moreFor context, I am a Midwesterner who relocated to Houston at the end of 2024. And I have enjoyed coffee from some of the best baristas in the world (at least according to the WBC). I was in Brownsville on business; the town is an objective bummer. The barista at this location (Gina I believe her name is) on the other hand--is not. I ordered a dry cortado, which could not have been produced with more skill--and she was fast. By far the best cup of coffee I have had since moving to Texas. And it is the only thing that will cause me to not avoid a trip to Brownsville in the future. If Gina can consistently produce espresso drinks as good as this, she is a goddamn national treasure. The mayor of this brutally hot and humid strip mall of a town (or state, for that matter) should give her a key to the city. Better yet, a plane ticket, apartment, and job at the coffee shop down the street from me. In any event, if you are a proud resident of Brownsville, I do not mean offense; it's just not my jam. And if you are from a place north of the Mason-Dixon Line in town on business, adjust your expectations accordingly. Either way, you should take advantage of your situation and get an espresso drink from 956 Coffee and...
