I took a friend here from Wisconsin because I had heard so many good things about it. I have no idea if I just had a bad experience or if most of the reviews on here are untruthful. I heard this was one of the best steaks in town and the best home cooking. I can truly say this was THE WORST DINNER I’VE EVER HAD IN COLLEGE STATION and the absolute worst customer service.
Me and him both ordered steaks. I ordered a ribeye and he ordered the New York strip. They brought me a PIECE OF SEASONED FAT AND GRISTLE. My ribeye was barely edible and I could only take about three bites to the point where I actually asked for them to take it off my ticket. It was the toughest, gristly ribeye steak I had ever had and seemed more like an OLD RETIRED LONGHORN BULL rather than a choice piece of Angus beef. His steak was dry and I tried a bite. It was LIKE TRYING TO CHEW A RUNG OUT DISH RAG WITH SOME SALT AND PEPPER ON IT. The meat in general just seemed low quality. We both ordered medium rare.
All of the food in general just seemed LOW TO AVERAGE QUALITY. Even the ICE CREAM on the cobbler was that CHEAP KIND that tasted like FROZEN COOL WHIP. Our drinks were left empty and the waitress serving us didn’t even try to clear the table for us before serving dessert, trying rather to push the GREASY, DIRTY plates around on the table (which I did not hold against her because she was a sweet young lady and it was obvious to me that she had not been trained properly.)
One would think that would be enough embarrassment for one night, but WAIT, THERE’S MORE. When I went to the register to pay, the cashier told me it was $96. I questioned her and I ask “what on there is $96?” (because they were supposed to have comped off the OLD BOOT SOLES that they tried to serve me as a steak). She responded curtly and rudely “Everything!”, then she shoved my card into the machine to run it. I said, “Wow, you sure popped that off fast.” Then I reached across that counter (yes I did) and my yanked my card back out of that machine before she could charge me the wrong price. She quickly informed me that they did not have any managers there. I thought this was a bit suspicious and then an older woman came to the front and she seemed friendly. I explained to her that the steak was supposed to be comped off my meal and that I did not appreciate the rudeness of the cashier when I questioned her about it. She then informed me that she wasn’t the manager and that there wasn’t even a manager there at the restaurant that night. She did apologize and comp the steak off of my ticket.
This was my FIRST AND LAST MEAL at Sodolacks. In all reality, I was really looking forward to what was supposed to be a home-cooked Texas meal and enjoying that experience with my friend. I left there embarrassed and apologizing to him. I’ve had much better home cooking at other places. I do not have any idea why people rave about this place. The food was very mediocre at best and the service was absolutely horrible. I think that it is known because at one time it was probably really good. Too bad that I did not get that...
Read moreI’ve been here twice before with my husband and was greeted by a waiter shortly after being seated both times. This time as a person of color alone without her white partner I was made to feel extremely uncomfortable with the lack of service or at minimum a greeting from any of the multiple waiters walking back and forth after I was seated for 15minutes.
I was seated immediately after walking in and given a menu but staff interaction ended there. I waited for 10 minutes when 2 other parties eventually arrived and were seated to the front of my table and beside mine. The table next to me was approached shortly after and put in their order. I understand there are different sections for waiters so I kept waiting. A few minutes later the table in front of me is also approached to start taking their order by a different waiter. At that point I’d been waiting for 15 minutes and had not been spoken to except for the girl that seated me. I got up to leave as the other table were already being handed their beers.
Two tables came in at different times after I had been seated and I still hadn’t been greeted or asked for my drink order. Had the other tables not have come in and been serviced so quickly I wouldn't have minded continuing to wait. At some point a waitress even checked on every single table in my area with her “best friend” who I assume she was training and still skipped my table. I only come here because Longhorn Tavern Steakhouse closes early on Mondays but after this experience I will not be returning. I’m used to visiting restaurants like this in BCS where you feel out of place( if you know what I mean )but I have never had an experience where I just wasn’t acknowledged for so long while others who came in much later were serviced. I honestly hope y'all do better in the future but I have a feeling you’re perfectly happy with your...
Read moreI rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience deserves to be shared. I recently visited Sodolaks and ordered the ribeye steak, only to receive it severely undercooked. I was only able to eat about half- the only edible part. When I raised my concern, I was told the owner wasn’t present although our waitress, Windy, agreed the steak was not cooked properly. Because we had eaten a portion of the steak (the half that was cooked properly), they refused to do anything about it - not even a partial credit or a simple apology. When Windy walked away, another employee approached our table, and again, she repeated that half the steak was eaten and she would contact the owner. There was never any apology from anyone for the poor experience. It was brushed off with everyone repeatedly stating the owner, who was not present, had the final say. How can any business operate with staff who are not empowered to make decisions when the owner steps away?
Noone came back to check on us after we were told the owner would be contacted, and when I followed up with the cashier on our way out, I was informed that the owner had declined to issue any form of reimbursement solely because we ate part of the dish. That kind of rigid, dismissive response says a lot. This wasn’t about the money - it was about principle and basic customer service.
In small towns like this, how you treat people is everything. Word of mouth matters. The food was mediocre, but what really sealed the deal was the poor attitude and lack of accountability. It’s naive to assume your customers don’t have choices - we absolutely do. We brought a party of 10 and none of us will be returning. I hope others consider this review before choosing to dine at Sodolaks. Expect poor service and zero ownership if...
