I really wanted to like this place. We are a big fan of Louisiana and have family in Shreveport and love going to NOLA.
My husband advised me not to go, but I’ll always try a place twice before I call it quits.
My family and I went the first time a couple of months ago. We were the only people there. It was dark and the service was meh. We got gumbo, boudin balls, kid’s fried fish and a pork chop platter. Everything was over seasoned and small portions compared to the price we paid for.
We love Juicy Crawfish. It’s our go-to place and the price is reasonable for the quality and service you get.
With that being said, we didn’t go to Remnant for the decor. Sometimes, the hole in the wall joints are the best. We decided to try it out one more time, because of the advertisement on FB. Who wouldn’t want crawfish at 5/lb?
Heck, my family is Vietnamese... we go through crawfish like nothing.
We ordered 5 pounds of crawfish and a chicken tender platter. We waited over an hour for our food and didn’t get checked on until 40 minutes after we ordered.
I asked if the crawfish came with dipping sauce like ie: butter, ETC. the server said they didn’t know and that the kitchen takes care of all that.
I decided to ask for it to-go and the server had an attitude like I said something to offend her.
They said our food was taking longer because of the corn and potatoes. They didn’t want to serve us undercooked food. Guess what? It was still undercooked and corn shouldn’t take over an hour to soften.
Mind you, while we waited for our food... all the tables cleared out and the people who came after us, got their food before us.
I’m not one to make a scene at an establishment and I just wanted to get our food and go home. I paid and still tipped, was polite and went about our way.
We came home and this is the spill. I’m a lover of anything spicy... my family? Not so much. The food was spicy even for me. The crawfish had flavor on top of it, but none inside the meat. There was no butter or dripping sauce coming from the crawfish. Some of the crawfish was spicy and some just tasted like boiled water.
We ended up going to Juicy Cajun Crawfish today and the price isn’t that much more than Remnant. We got 4 lbs of crawfish, you can pick the amount of spiciness, the flavor and if you want garlic flavor dipping butter on the side. We also got the fried fish and oyster platter with Cajun fries and a sweet tea. It came with tartar sauce, ketchup and cocktail sauce.
We paid 43 at Remnant and 49 at Juicy.
I’m giving this place 3 stars because of the owner. I can tell you’re a hardworking man and want the best for your customers. I heard about your Cajun cooking before y’all got this location. I understand that places can get busy, but you can’t overlook some of your customers and show out to other ones. I say this because I saw you went above and beyond for the guys sitting...
Read moreBoudan Balls are pretty tasty and you get 5 of them slightly smaller than a golf ball. They are spicey, deep fried, but not crispy or greasy and they are served with a mildy sweet and tangy tomato based dipping sauce.
Seafood gumbo's roux was wayyyy to thin and under seasoned. There was a crab claw in my bowl for authenticity. The sausage, and shrimp were bite sized pieces and provided a fairly good flavor, but that roux was just a deal breaker. There was also too much rice in my bowl.
The fried fish serving size was a bit odd. I had 1-1/2 pieces of small catfish filets that were rather thin, but fried with a good ratio between crispiness and tenderness. The fry coating was more flour than cornmeal, so it didnt have that traditional southern-fried texture. Had there been more filets and thicker ones at that, the fish would have been nearer to perfect. Green beans and a side salad were my side choices. The green beans were from the can, but were seasoned very nicely with bacon and not too salty however, the bowl was not filled. It looked like someone ate a portion before it got to me. The salad was fresh, but it too was not a full serving, but a 3 forkfull portion. Overall food was good, but portions were less than satisfsctory. They should either use smaller bowls for side items or fill them up and use whole filets of fish.
Service was friendly and very...
Read moreThe remnant of Nawlins!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I haven’t had food this good in a long time 😘There was no wait time and extra parking in the back which I appreciate to help we walk after such a big meal I was planning to eat 😁 The Remnants of Nawlins has a cozy home cook vibe. Lots of different size tables to sit you in a hurry no matter the party size. This hidden gem is definitely worth a try. We started with the boudain balls and tea. The boudain balls had a crispy crust that I loved. And the dipping sauce added a little extra to it. We tried the combination plates fried shrimp and fish with 2 sides I chose Mac n cheese w green beans. Hubby had the fried pork chop & shrimp with green beans & jambalaya. I posted extra close of pics of the food so you can see the seasonings. Now let me tell you our food was fried to perfection!!! Great crispy crust. Fish was light breading. Shrimp was perfectly seasoned. Better that many large restaurants in Bryan / College station. And the sides were bomb. I didn’t leave any sides on my plate even though I was so full I had to finish that Mac & cheese and green beans w bacon🤤 We are looking forward to our next visit to see what else we can try. That’s for the delicious food we greatly...
