Every time I come to Sul & Beans, I have a quiet, positive experience. I enjoy coming with friends, family, and church members to enjoy a nice dessert with a friendly atmosphere, with hard workers who attend to needs.
This was not the case in last night's visit. While coming with my coworkers after a dinner for dessert, we happened to get into a bit of a conflict with a party next to us. Granted, it was our fault because we were moving chairs above someone's head to set our own table. So my boss apologized on behalf of our group, for we were a big party, and invaded their space, potentially causing some danger. This I understood and also felt guilty for as well.
However, the main point of concern was the rude tone and extremely arrogant attitude in which the manager talked to us. After the party complained to the manager, we were not indignant at the fact that the party complained to the manager, for we took ownership of our fault and apologized.
What this manager proceeded to do instead of mediating peacefully and efficiently resolving the conflict, was yell in an outburst towards my boss and our group for being the cause of the complaint. She happened to yell at us for doing this, further shaming us for what we did despite already having resolved the conflict with the party and making amends. Instead of calming it down, she decided to fan the flame, raising her voice in front of other customers about what we did. While my boss and our group apologized, she continued to justify her decision for lecturing us, saying "How could we do this at this place as fellow Koreans?"
Though the bingsoo and the desserts are always delicious, I ate with a heavy heart tonight. More than angry, I am frustrated and disappointed at the attitude and behavior of this manager. This only makes me concerned if she treats her workers this way, and I wouldn't be surprised if she does. Though I understand the heat and the busyness of business, this does not excuse or give a pass for rude behavior. Purely unacceptable, unprofessional, and this only gives a bad reputation for this place I once called a comfort place for dessert.
Now I am hesitant to come in fear of seeing that manager lady again. Maybe next time it will be...
Read moreI ordered a bingsu and a cheese injeolmi toast, but I was served something completely different — a regular injeolmi toast. I took the toast to the counter and asked a female staff member if this was the cheese injeolmi toast. She brought it to the kitchen, came back, and confidently told me that it was.
I believed her and went back to my seat. But when I started eating, I realized there was absolutely no cheese in the toast. So I brought it back again and told her, “This isn’t cheese injeolmi toast.” That’s when she suddenly changed her story and said, “We don’t have cheese injeolmi toast.”
I was completely shocked — the item is clearly listed on your menu. And yet, instead of apologizing for the mistake, the staff insisted it didn’t exist. Because the store was so crowded, I wasn’t able to continue the conversation, and I left the toast and walked out, extremely frustrated.
I was still upset when I got home, so I decided to call the store. I asked to speak with the owner. I could hear the owner’s voice in the background saying to the staff, “I’m busy, just explain it quickly and hang up.” That was incredibly rude and unprofessional.
I insisted on speaking directly with the owner. When owner finally got on the phone, there was no apology just a cold, “You can come get your $6 back.”Just a dismissive offer to refund the money.
The owner then told me that we had paid for a regular injeolmi toast, so there was no issue. But how would I possibly know the difference in pricing between the two items? The problem started because your staff took the wrong order. I simply ordered what was on the menu.
The lack of responsibility, the inconsistent answers, and most of all, the complete lack of basic courtesy from both staff and owner were absolutely unacceptable. The way I was treated today shows a complete disregard for customers and zero professionalism.
I hope you take this seriously. A refund doesn’t fix the disrespect I...
Read moreSul & Beans started off in K Town in Los Angeles, and now has expanded to the new K Town in Buena Park.
Sul & Beans is an exact clone of Sul Bing in Korea, which is dubbed the original and the best.
But how is this shaved ice (aka bingsoo) different from all the other shaved ice on the market?
The texture is different. This is super fine shaved ice. Instead of water ice, it's a subtle flavored milk ice. Injeomi (one of the most popular flavors) is a unique flavor that works with shaved ice. It's rice cake powder that compliments the super fine milk shaved ice. It's not too sweet and catered towards the Korean taste buds. You can still eat it without the complimentary extra condensed milk that's provided.
My recent trip to Korea, I loved Sul Bing so much, I went five times and even went to the original in the City of Busan.
Sul & Beans is as close to Sul Bing you can get. Trust me Yelpers.
Tips Three people max should share one shaved ice. Get extra cups to transfer the shaved ice (if you don't like the idea of other spoons double dipping). Try the injelomi, the rice cake powder shaved ice. Somehow, someway, the shaved ice works well with that topping. Request for more condensed milk (no charge). Still having trouble what to decide? There's a display of every flavor in the Turbo Air refrigerator by the cash register. Safe flavors are strawberry, mango or the Oreo.
Sul & Beans is a unique dessert to try after a delicious Korean or non Korean meal in Buena Park or Fullerton. Follow the tips and you'll be as confident as how Steph Curry...
