I’ve lived down the street for a couple years and was pleasantly surprised to have such a great bar nearby. The food is excellent and when I don’t want to eat one of their delicious burgers or the Yard Bird (so yum!), they have very tasty vegetarian options. The Vegan club is so so yummy. The owner is awesome. The staff is awesome. Seafood Dan and his karaoke DJ skills are awesome. The regulars are chill and great conversationalists. There is regularly a game of cribbage happening. The interior is aesthetically pleasing with fun stuff to look at. What can I say? I love this place.

my once-estranged son told me the essex pub was a good place to get coke so i went to check it out but when i ordered some at the bar the bar tender told me they only have pepsi products which was fine i guess but it just did'nt hit the spot so i got the pbr instead and things got a littel better

A true eclectic vibe here throughout the week. If you want a good hearty snack, go for the Bavarian-style, soft nestled pretzels (2 per order). You get a creamy, mildly sweet mustard sauce AND a smooth, semi-salty yellow cheese sauce to mix it up. 👍🏻

I went to the Essex Street Pub around 1987-1989. I was a graduate student at UB. The Essex Street Pub was excellent back then. As was Buffalo generally--and still is. I was surprised when I first stepped foot in the Essex Street Pub, having been led there by an English woman who was living in Buffalo, as it was in what is largely a residential area. I remember finding myself at a table off in the corner, with this very nice English woman, and I think she suggested that I get a "Watney" beer. Something like that. It was something English. After she took me to the Essex Street Pub I took her to Anacone's on Bailey Avenue--and she like Anacone's. I no longer live in Buffalo, though I visit often, and would love to visit the Essex Street Pub again. Fond memories! It's sad that Anacone's is closed. Great beef-on-weck. And great pretzel rods with mustard. And the Anacone son was a...

Complete trash fest. Went for a drink after having dinner across the street. After about 20 mins, a completely obliterated woman with an accent in overalls comes to our table looking for chalk to attempt to write something on the chalkboard. She then loses that, drops her phone 3 times in a row (not exaggerating) and stumbles back to the bar. We mentioned to the bartender that she should leave, and the bartender asks us to leave. Are you kidding me? She was obviously a regular trash client and they knew each other. Have fun keeping your friends happy and not respectable paying customers!

Update: Nice response from the owner. Making up stuff to cover for friends instead of admitting a mistake was made. I encourage everyone to sort by the 1 star ratings on this place and see the many issues with the staff. Reoccurring issue over...
