Wiechec's was touted to me as something of an "if you know, you know" locals spot for both their wings and their fish fry, so of course I had to pay a visit. Immediately on entering, I fell in love with the oldschool vibe, which is so deeply authentic and unpretentious- a real throwback of a spot. Our waitress was perfectly friendly and attentive. While already a day or two in advance I was hyping up the fish basket to myself, I simply wasn't feeling it on arrival, so went for a double of wings (Red Sox and a honey cajun (or something like that)) and my companion, the salisbury steak dinner special. Oh, we also both had the chicken corn chowder- that was spectacular, and probably the highlight of what we had. The wings were cooked very well-- they're mostly on the large side and have a nice crips--, however I found them (the cajun in particular) to be vastly lacking seasoning: barely any salt or spice present. The Red Sox were a little better, but I've had better such wings elsewhere insofar as depth of flavour. The salisbury steak was a very generous portion and fairly standard- nothing really to write home about, seemingly not the highest quality ingredients. I'm giving only three stars based on this visit, but 100% intend to go again on a future trip to try their famous fish fry and some of their offerings (and perhaps a more standard flavour of wings, since the crisp is promising). I really enjoyed the...
Read moreI am not going to sugarcoat it — this place is a dive bar/restaurant. That being said, it is one of the best in Buffalo & almost everyone in Buffalo knows about how good it is. If you’re recently relocated/around the area on a trip to Buffalo — ya gotta go. It’s like a rite of passage.
My family has brought me here since I was a kid…have always gone on Fridays and gotten the soup and fish fry. Never disappoints. That being said — I have been in Iowa away for work a bit and finally got the chance to stop by again today (Monday, 12/9/24). While the fish fry is Fridays only, they always have 4 soups on. Their chicken noodle soup is absolutely to die for & in my opinion the best in Buffalo by far. Always loaded up, filling to the point that 2 bowls could be your meal, and a great deal at $5.
Also wanted to say that the service here is always great. Ate my soup at the bar — bartender tonight who was a younger male (didn’t catch his name unfortunately) was A+. Better than any bartender you’ll find downtown, at chain restaurants, or pretty much any other local haunt in Buffalo.
Overall — this place is amazing. Having travelled all over the US with sports teams, it is one of those places you try to find that’s a local legend in whatever city you’re in. Try it out — you won’t be...
Read moreI really didn't want to have to post a negative review, as I really like this place, the atmosphere, and usually the staff, however the last time I was here the way we were treated was completely unreasonable. I was here with someone with celiac disease, which means they can't eat anything with wheat in it or even if something with wheat is touching the rest of the food. When they ordered their broiled fish it was explicitly stated that they didn't want any bread with their meal (and also they were the one who ordered a beer and yet they gave it to me), yet low and behold out comes the food with the bread right on top. Now we understand that people make mistakes and it would have been ok if we had just been given a remade plate, and we explained to the waitress that she could not eat the meal and asked her for a fresh one, however she angrily went to the kitchen and took off the bread even though we explicitly explained multiple times that would poison her. This was completely uncalled for and again I normally love this place but I think that was just totally unreasonable.
Edit: I also forgot to mention we were not given silverware until well after we...
