Los Toltecos of Fairfax — Restaurant in Burke

First time and never going back. Started off with my bf asking for a side of queso, so he could eat with his burrito. Server said she couldn’t do that and she’d have to charge him for the appetizer size...ok hard to believe you can’t give us a side or even just charge for a side but we let it go. Food came out quick and it was decent. We asked for our check and as I look down, I see a big BUG right on top of the side tortillas, and immediately it starts moving, and nestles itself in between the tortillas. I’m mortified. The waiter comes around, she’s grossed out, KILLS the bug at the table and takes the plate away. She says she’ll bring a manager but instead comes back just herself and says she’ll give us a discount. The discount turns out to be less than 20%. It would’ve been nice if he had at least taken my meal off since i was dipping those tortillas in my food the entire meal!!! Anyway, a different waiter bring our check, we give her the card and nobody comes back for a very long time. Finally I wave down our server and tell her we never got our card back. She leaves and then comes back and says nobody here has our card, and asks us to describe the waiter we gave it to because nobody has it. UM WHAT? Finally she comes back with our card. Overall, terrible terrible experience. And we NEVER heard from the manager. I called the restaurant still upset on our way home, the phone is picked up then hung up TWICE. Finally speak to HERBERT, who claimed he was the manager. And told us he didn’t care and that he couldn’t do anything, except the $7 discount off a $47 tab. I could not make...

This place hasn't been updated in over twenty five years. I used to like it when I was younger but after experiencing so many other restaurants over the years, this place is just sad. So the atmosphere is not that great. The food is worse. I ordered the birria tacos which I've had two other times within the last year from other places in the area and was so disappointed. Way too many thick chunks of onion, the beef had no flavor (which is astonishing for this dish), and the dip also had no flavor at all. It just tasted like slightly salted grease. Like did anyone even try this before sending it out? The refried beans and rice taste exactly how I remember so that was yummy and nostalgic but nothing to write home about.

Service was fine this visit. I would like to take the time to vent about another visit though, maybe fifteen years ago, when I had some plastic in my enchilada. I'm not one to try and get free stuff - I simply told the server that there was plastic in my food - but I was still eating my food and didn't ask to speak to a manager. The server got the manager anyways and he came over and almost angrily told me that it was from when they grate the cheese. Surprised that I needed to know that, I was like, ok, and then he left the table. Such bad service - no apology, no, I'm going to figure out how to fix this so it doesn't happen again... Just wow. Have no idea if the same guy still is...

5 star food. One star for one server in particular that almost ruined our first visit to this restaurant. I have held off on making a review as we had hoped it was a one time incident as we’d like to give the waitress the benefit of the doubt. 👎🏻 Dayana (we only know her name from the receipt as she did not introduce herself and we only saw her 3 times in our 3hr visit) it was national margarita day so we were expecting service to be a little slow. The host managed to set our party of 7 within 15 min of our arrival at 8 pm. (A good start!) After about 10-15 min Dayana arrived at our table without a greeting to take our drink orders. It took another 10-15 for the drinks to arrive. We then had to flag her down to put in a food order. After our food arrived we intended to order more drinks and food but we did not see her until after the restaurant had closed. We had to signal another waitress for our check but when she brought the check she simply put it down and walked away. We were not given the option to split our $100 tab when we were so clearly separate checks. Very disappointing (although we still tipped 18%, the service did not match the tip)

Since that first visit we have come back 2 more times and have been very happy. The food is delicious! $5 margaritas on Friday are our favorite! Forgetting about the 1st visit, the service and waitresses have been very friendly and...
