I wish we could say we had a good experience, but we did not. First I will give you the positive. The place is nicely decorated, they allow dogs at the outside patio eating area, and our hostess was very kind.
Now the bad.... They were not very busy when we arrived after 7, but you could see they were short staffed. We waited about 10 mins before they took our drink order, and another 10 mins before taking our order. Our waitress was also the bar tender, so she was busy (but very nice). It took over 40 mins to get out food. All three of us ordered the exact same thing, the Whitefish sandwich.
After finally getting our food, which was sloppy thrown on a basket, we were starving and ready to eat and run as we had things to do. My Mom took a bite and immediately spit it out. She told me it was cold and raw.... Now these are deep-fried prices of fish. So we pulled back the breading and she wasn't kidding. It was very raw and cold to the touch in the center! So we all opened our fish and every one of them was raw....
I honestly have no idea how this happened. They took forever to make the food. My only thought nis the fryer wasn't keeping temperature as they were frying many foods.
It then took 15 minutes for us to wave down our waitress (who is also the bartender). And tell her what happened. She didn't seem shocked, she apologized and was very kind. I informed her we didn't want any other food since we had to leave, but I would gladly pay for our soda pop.
The experience was all around bad. I don't know if I can give the place a second...
Read moreIt was last Thursday around 6:40 we arrived, chilled from the beach rock hunting with a storm brewing, we wanted a nice hot cup of chili & whitefish basket.. the waitress was slow as molasses to even come to us, when she finally did we placed our orders, the place was not busy either.. we waited about 20 minutes thinking she would appear with our chili to start but nothing, she was nowhere to be seen.. 45 minutes later the cook yells out her name, as he placed food in the window..5 more minutes, then 10 more and I look over as he is back in the window.. it was our food- he brought it to us after it sat in a window, not under a warming light.. still no waitress.. no water in our cups, chili cold, fries cold fish luke warm.. she finally comes over and says..”oh you got your food” I was like yeah cold as it sat.. she walks away- another 10 minutes she walks to the table behind us and my husband asks for tarter sauce.. she gives him some comment about she will have to go downstairs to grab it.. 5, 10,15 more minutes she has walked by .. no tarter when she FINALLY brought it.. the meal was over… she never said sorry, never said a word handed us the bill and silent!! We were so disappointed with this place.. had we had good service it might of been good.. one & done...

Our family of 6 visited Grand Marais Tavern on July 4, 2022 for lunch. We got seated after a very short wait though the place was packed and it was 4th of July.
All the food we ordered was delicious and service was efficient, friendly, and attentive. Buffalo wings were probably the best I ever had! Very juicy and perfectly coated with the sauce of a right hot level.
Perch and whitefish were both excellent! Very fresh, flakey, and perfectly cooked!
Appetizers: Buffalo Tossed Wings Basket - sooo good! Mozzarella Sticks - simple but very fresh and tasty Bowl of Chili - done just right
Mains: Perch Basket (x2) - just the best! Whitefish Basket (x2) - very good! We found perch to be better though. Pesto Grilled sandwich - good
Our waitress Brennan was very friendly and accommodating. Besides correctly and quickly bringing our orders she recommended a good local beer for me that matched my taste. Thanks!
I wish I had pictures to post but we all were so hungry and the food smelled so deliciously good that picture taking was completely forgotten :)
We highly recommend this restaurant if you are in Grand Marais, MI! It's certainly...
