We had quite the experience dining here this evening. I would like to start this review by saying I have been a server of 10 years myself. Tonight we were looking for a pleasant sushi experience and left a bit irritated. Among sitting down our server seemed friendly, and a bit rushed - which is more than understandable. While ordering we had asked for shrimp ebi as one of the orders…the lady was in a rush and didn’t seem to acknowledge my mother ordering the shrimp, so attempted to help by asking if she had heard that we ordered the ebi, in which there was zero response; just a quick turn around to get to other tables. We did receive our two regular salads before our meal but waited eagerly on the seaweed salad that had been ordered as well. After multiple attempts to get our servers attention, we had to resort to calling her as she was walking by which also took multiple attempts. That was okay, the seaweed salad came eventually and it was eaten. At this point everything was fine, as I again; understand times can get busy on one person having multiple tables. Our sushi came out and it was wonderful; but yet of course; there was NO ebi shrimp that we had ordered twice. We also decided to just let this go -as an attempt to get her attention simply wasn’t worth the struggle anymore. My son had sat with an empty drink for 10 minutes (put on the edge of the table for visible sight) before I attempted once again. We got the refill. THEN, came time for the checks, we were handed one bill and she was quickly gone again before listening to me state that we needed it split up. She came to take the check and I stated we would need it split and she was gone WITHOUT A WORD, yet again. She came back to take the check once more, and left again before I could state we would need it split by item. She comes back and all but throws an evenly split bill down on the table, as if we were incapable of easily 50/50ing a bill ourselves. At this point it was just rude, and nothing less. I had literally not been heard or listened to during ordering nor, while trying to pay. Not ONE time were we asked if our order was correct, or if we needed anything. We finally decided to throw together what cash we had just be done with the experience. Unfortunately, it was just above the amount due, with little tip. -I give the benefit of the doubt always but I cannot say I hold guilt for this. (Had we had our orders split properly and we were able to use our cards as planned, there would have been a proper tip.) It shocked me to my core that the server had no time to pay attention to our needs during our visit, but DID find the time to chase us out asking where the tip was. Never in my life have I seen such unprofessionalism in the restaurant industry and I truly hope this was just an “off” night for her. The atmosphere was beautiful and the food we did receive was delicious.

Unfortunately I would have to give this location a lower than average review. Keep in mind I am not a local and this was my first time here, and I am comparing it to the hibachi style food and sushi back home (In New England) where i must say is unmatched. The food was not good for 3/4 people in the group. Two people ordered Sushi and did not like it one bit, I ordered chicken hibachi and had to substitute for fried rice instead of white rice which is unusual to us. The Sushi's texture was that of old Sushi, mushy and not flavorful. My chicken was not the best I have had and not the worst, if that helps. Both sides of 'Fried' rice were slightly mushy and hot fried whatsoever, and was practically just white rice with nothing added into it to make it seen like fried rice. The only thing that made the experience better than the worst I've had was the Alchoholic beverages that we order, of which you could at least taste the alchohol.. and the waitress was polite and on top of things. I would not go back but like I said I'm not a resident in the area and I am comparing to food back home so maybe it is a lot better for the local people. I wouldn't say 'don't go here' because I am fair and every business deserves more than one opinion because it is at the end of the day someones livelihood.

After driving past Calabash Gourmet's packed parking lot multiple times, we finally stopped in for dinner. We are so happy we did! Finally we have found our "always go to" Chinese Restaurant! While we had our short fifteen minute wait to be seated, we were amazed at the number of to-go orders going out the door. We felt very confident this was going to be good! A few regulars told us we would not be disappointed. A warm saki and kirin to start the mood and the appetizer sampler. The apps could have been warmer, but everything was delicious. My bride had the Chicken with Garlic Sauce. Amazing! I thoroughly enjoyed my Beef with Scallops for my entree. We will have to try the white rice next time. The fried rice was just okay. Suggestion, offer jasmine rice? Service was GREAT!!! ***Date night 6/21 Update*** Well, with our first visit and one to-go meal behind us we went for the trifecta. It was an easy choice and we were not let down! Our server Deanne was absolutely wonderful!!! The food... not enough superlatives to describe how delicious each dish was. The tempura shrimp appetizer was AMAZING! My bride said her Wonton soup is the best she ever has eaten. Both entrees were equally delicious. Thank you again!!!

The sushi is great, especially the super crunchy roll. However, prices are very high at an average of $8-9 a roll. The prices for the rest of the food are equally high. Now normally this wouldn't impact my review, however the taste and quality of the food did not match the price. The sauces do not match what you would expect and from my experience, some tasted...off..

On another note, service is pretty awful, especially as you get near closing. Table bussers are also wait staff and are forgetful, unaccompanying, and rather crude. Our food was brought out on a trolley instead of a standard tray, which seems very low-class compared to the price. As we were eating, drink refills were hard to come by, beer orders were forgotten to be handed off to the bar tender to fulfill, and beyond everything else, while we were eating, he came by mopping the floor right next to our table. Gross. After our dinner was over, we were too full to eat desert however our "waiter" brought it up to us that, "normally I'd ask if you wanted desert, but we're closed now so." I was blown away by this line and that was the final nail in the coffin for me.

Overall the environment is nice, but I can't recommend someone to go here with the current staffing situation. Professionalism is HIGHLY lacking and you feel like you're just there spending money.

I will try this place again in the future in case my experience is a one off but, from how the dining room was that night, it seems normal for it to be this way. If you're in Calabash and want sushi, this place can deliver if you're willing to spring the extra $$ however I'd stay away from the main courses.

Update: 3/13/2019 I tried this place again. This time I opted for their hibachi. My experience this time was greater than before, however still on the not-so-great side. I ordered a shrimp and steak hibachi plate. The shrimp were surprisingly large, however this was the only highlight of my meal. There was an okay amount of shrimp and steak but the taste was....meh. The shrimp were cooked well, but the steak was very chewy and overcooked. For some reason they doused the entire dish with a weird sauce that seems to be included with most of their dishes and it taste very off. The sauce has a tingy taste to it that reminds me of something left uncovered in the fridge for a while. This sauce was not very pleasing, the only saving grace for it, was that the sweetness complemented the shrimp. The dish was primarily vegetables. Lots of odd vegetables that didn't really have a place in this dish. The zucchini and squash were way overcooked and pretty much mush, the broccoli was fine but the sauce had ruined it for me. I ended up just eating the steak and the shrimp which was not very filling by the end of it. I could've asked for a different dish, but my friends dishes all had the same odd sauce on them, and I just took it as a loss. I hate giving restaurants bad reviews but I just cannot recommend this place. The price of the food is pretty outrageous for what you get, and the taste/quality of the food is lacking.

Overall I still recommend going somewhere else. The food here doesn't taste great, it's overpriced, and it's just overall not a great experience eating here. The only saving grace is the fried "sushi", which in my opinion, is very hard to mess up when it's just cream cheese, seaweed, crab, and avocado. I will not be going here again even if it is a local restaurant. I LOVE hibachi/Japanese/Chinese food, and most other places I've been to are great, but in comparison, this one is not... Sorry guys, I wish you the...

I am a huge fan and very experienced person when it comes to eating Asian food of all varieties.. so in my following comments know that I am 50 years old and have been loving Asian food my whole life since I have been about 4 years old and have eaten Chinese food and other Asian Foods all over our country, and my Top Choice whenever I'm in another state then go out looking for something yummy to eat is usually Chinese,Thai food or Japanese... so I need to share my experience with other people also looking for the same whenever they go out to eat.. I do not know how Calabash Gourmet has ever received a 4.6 rating on Google...I have never been to a place with more bland, simple, disgusting tasting and amateur way of serving their food.. us Foodies call it flavor town when it tastes great and everything comes together.. this place however seems like they just droped their ingredients in the sauce then heated it up in a microwave and served it, thier Frozen then thawed shrimp was waterlogged when they served it with Hunan sauce, the vegetables were not even partially cooked and the sauce had no chance to cook down so none of the flavors married together to make a complete dish, which I believe they used no spices except what came in the sauce that obviously came from a can or jar.. this was such a bad food experience that I actually have had a bad day until I submitted this review, I hope the owner sees this and does something about it , because it's not fair to people who actually want to eat the food they seek.. this food is unedible,so I encourage people to also post their reviews in the right manner because 4.6 Stars doesn't cut it, I would have given it a half star rating if it gave me the option.... thanks to Calabash Gourmet and sushi bar for ruining the one time me and my wife have had to go out alone and...
