Have to say on some level I was impressed but overall the experience just isn't worth the time, drive and money, if you aren't staying in Calabash. We had a so-so time our first trip and decided to try again. Everybody has an off day. Second trip was worse. Cashiers do not communicate well with the customers, especially new ones. First trip the product was wonderful. Boil and bake is the only way to do authentic bagels. But, I was a District Manager for a national bagel chain and I believe quality should extend to customer service as well. While we sat there we heard the cashier shout, "We are almost out of bagels. We only have what you see," to the customers in line. Six people walked out while the manager was sitting in a corner chatting up regulars or friends? The second trip, the cashier was more polite but it bothered me when the manager opened up a second register and took the gentleman behind us? I could tell from their conversation it was someone she knew. This time the bagels were obviously over proofed. The outside was soft and not shiny. The bread inside was soft and bread like. There were large air pockets that meant the yeast in the bagels were blown before they were baked. Because of that, they can't be boiled properly or they fall apart. Any good baker would have thrown that dough out. Its obvious the owner is very cost conscious and would prefer to sell second rate product instead throwing it out. I understand that its a small business and labor and supply costs are up, but that's no excuse for bad management. Besides $17 for 6 bagels? Are you kidding me?
Answer to the Owner's response: 1.) I don't care if your owners are "9/11 survivors." That doesn't excuse bad customer service or bad product. Besides my complaint wasn't about taste. My complaint was about how your baker screwed up and then you selling second rate product. 2.) I paid with a credit card. You have no idea how I paid. You never asked or talked to me. You just grabbed your good friend and brought him up to the front of the line past me and the 3 people in front of me. 3.) The people that left on my first trip? You never spoke to them. You made no effort to try. My wife and I spoke to them in the parking lot. They noticed our out of state tags and started a conversation. They just wanted a quick cream cheese bagel and a coffee. 4.) I don't care how much experience you pretend to have. It doesn't excuse bad product and poor service. 6.) I've never paid $18 for a hamburger at McDonalds. What world are you living in? 7.) We bought 6 bagels. You charged us $10.30 or basically $1.72 per naked bagel. We got 2 everything, 2 bacon cheddar, 2 asiago. You upcharged us an additional $2 plus for the two bacon cheddars and $3 plus for the two asiagos. With tax it came out to over $17. You basically doubled the price of the asiago just because of the cheese? New York attitude may fly in New York but not...

Read moreI liked the Bagel Dock. Products and pricing was good. Everyone was busting their butts the entire time we were there around 1pm on a Sunday. The point of sale marketing was super heavy and thought out and I believed without researching that it is a concept for franchising. Ownership and management presence during our visit was also unusually heavy for the volume I witnessed. Based on what I saw at this time of the day I suspect that ownership was concerned about resetting for a holiday Monday and even when expecting a heavy hit with business the next day the level of that attention leads me to believe costs may be out of hand or there is an unhealthy amount of analysis paralysis with the numbers. Management seemed slightly stressed during my visit due to the ownership presence. Other clues give me concern about the health of this store. The Ace Hardware help wanted sign on the front door says desperation along with handwritten hours of operation rather than being permanent. Watching ownership interview a new hire and consulting management without smiling tell me that this could be a tough place to work. Just a couple of reviews in doing a little research shows ownership has a poor attitude and business ethic. Additionally, the number of cameras in the back of the house and dining room is concerning. My experience is that kitchen cams are meant to keep management straight and at this point I would recommend that if owners are being consulted, they should bring in other opinions. I would suggest having the GM from Boundary House come in as a mystery shopper. He runs great service and the staff are very welcoming. I saw some great team members here working hard today but something is wrong here. The comments on many of these reviews are concerning and that attitude leads to attrition and putting your keys on the counter and not coming back. You will lose everything by acting like that. Update : No...
