Simon's Fish & Chips — Restaurant in California

We ordered the Cod Fish & Chips, fried clams, calamari rings, popcorn shrimp, clam chowder and coleslaw!! Our to-go order was very carefully packaged and the smell as I was holding it on the way home, was amazing!!! The prices were not excessive at all! The food was amazing, filling, and way better than I had expected after reading some of the super low reviews. The owner was very patient, descriptive, to the point and helpful. The Cod was fat and perfect! The fried clams were delish! We love calamari and have never had these voud-filling rings! And each of the fried items had their own unique batter... not just similar, bland variations for each. The tartar and cocktail sauces were great quality I definitely liked it better than those I've had at other restaurants - a ton easier to stomach! The coleslaw was very fresh and was perfectly refreshing, a great contrast with the rest of the warm & yummy food. Husband said the clam chowder was good, but he is picky and spends a lot of time on his own chowders, so he always prefers his own. The decorations in the store were very entertaining for the toddler and the space was not uncomfortable at all. The seating area and workspace was very well maintained and clean. It's not a new location, so it will not have the super-fashionable decor like the new shops in town. We don't visit for photo ops... We visit to give you money for food! Although the food was okay, even if a bit overpriced for how much food you get (served on a paper plate with plastic utensils), the restaurant itself was like taking a trip back to the 70s! They say that they have been at the location for 40 years, and it shows! From the circa 1970s paneling to the circa 1970s fan by the door, I was depressed by the time we left. Even the flowers on the table looked tired and had dust on the edges. The huge swordfish on the wall was also covered in dust. I made the mistake of asking to use the restroom and had to wind my way through a tiny, cluttered kitchen full of empty, stacked boxes and debris (that rodents would adore) to arrive at a marginally-clean restroom with a stained toilet and a few dead bugs on the floor that I couldn't identify. If I am going to spend $15 on lunch, I want some ambience with my meal! Even a little quiet music would have helped. After 40 years, it might be time to remodel. Won't...

It was my first time going to eat at this fish n chips restaurant. When I walked in to order my impression of the restaurant was outdated and owner doesn't care about first impression. When I walked up to order it was the owner who took my order. Over all nice man but he reminded me of a person who is unsanitary. I placed my order and he told me 7 minute wait, I said ok. I saw him pull a plastic bag out of the freezer and took out the pieces of fish and put them into the fryer. I'm not a fan of frozen food restaurants. Anyway the whole time waiting for my food I was uneasy about the sanitary condition the restaurant was in. I got my food and walked out and thought it's over priced for the portion and not the best fish n chips I've eaten. It's not bad for frozen fish. It's not good...
