Sunflower Drive In has THE veggie burger in California. It's called the Nut Burger or, if you prefer it to be a little larger with a flatbread instead of a bun, it's called the "Super" Nutburger. The patty is a housemade mix of nuts, veggie pulp, chickpeas, perhaps a touch of cumin in the flavor, and who cares what else all fried up into a patty shape and layered in a burger with fresh lettuce, onion, tomato and sprouts with a sauce. You can request cheese and or avocado. It's very filling with high quality ingredients. I have friends who live in the SF Bay area and Santa Cruz. We all agree Sunflower Drive In Nutburger patty is the very best veggie burger we know of. It's been around since the 1970s. They have haven't modernized much and that's just fine. Prices remain reasonable. The experience is largely the same. Walk up to the window (which may have a line during peak lunch hour and weekends), order, get your number and find a spot a share picnic table outside or climb the parking lot hill and sit on the curb. This is a time to chat, people watch, be amused by the Fair Oaks Village charm. Keep your toddler clear of any roosters because they have been observed aggressively defending the flock from clueless small people who think petting or chasing chickens is fun. This is not a time to get upset about waiting for your food in a rush. It ain't McDonald's and you'd be harshing the vibe to demand it

I recently visited Sunflower Drive-In in Sacramento and had the opportunity to try their famous Nut Burger. Sunflower Drive-In is well-known for its wide range of vegetarian and vegan options, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. The Nut Burger was a delightful surprise. The patty, made from a blend of nuts and other wholesome ingredients, had a satisfying texture and a rich, nutty flavor that was unique and delicious. It was well-seasoned, with a perfect balance of savory and slightly sweet notes. The burger was served on a fresh, whole-grain bun and topped with crisp lettuce, juicy tomatoes, and a creamy sauce that added an extra layer of flavor. The ambiance of Sunflower Drive-In is charming and laid-back, with an inviting outdoor seating area perfect for a casual meal. The staff was friendly and efficient, making the experience enjoyable and hassle-free. Sunflower Drive-In is an excellent spot for anyone looking for tasty vegetarian and vegan options in Sacramento. The Nut Burger is a standout item I highly recommend, and I look forward to trying more of their menu. Whether you're a vegetarian, vegan, or just looking to try something new, Sunflower Drive-In is worth a visit!

I’m so bummed. I’ve heard great things about this place and loved the setting, the vintage vibe, the commitment to vegetarian and vegan food- it all is so, so great. I love supporting small, local business, especially one that’s been around for decades. I had such high hopes. The food however, was not good. The picture I’ve added is of the vegan burrito before I have eaten a bite. What a mess. The tortilla was dry and fell apart with even the lightest touch. It was also far too small for the amount of ingredients, namely sprouts, shoved into it. The beans were unseasoned and raw. The whole burrito was bland. I’m a vegan cook and know what’s possible here. This doesn’t even come close to the base level of goodness. Sadly, I also watched my food and others being prepared. I watched one cook turn to the fridge, dig for ingredients and drop several unwrapped nut burger patties on the dirty kitchen floor, pick them up and put them right back in the fridge. I saw the same cook wipe sweat from her brow, grab a drink and then turn back to making a sandwich, squishing it all together with her bare, unwashed hands. It was just all too much for me. Still feel nauseated from the experience.

I have been eating here since shortly after they opened almost 50 years ago in 1978. My mom would take my brother and I when were young because their food was a healthy alternative to other fast food type spots. Years later, as a high school kid in the 80s, I discovered the Super Nutburger with Cheese. Since then, it has been my go-to menu item. One summer afternoon visit, a staff member recommended adding avocado and mushrooms, thereby creating the ultimate Sunflower cuisine. I have ordered the same thing almost every time since, which probably numbers in the 100s of visits. As an adult in my 50s, it remained one of my all-time favourite places to eat. Nothing anywhere is really anything like it. The unique menu and quirky vibe make this place, in my opinion, one of the hidden gems of the Sacramento area. It's the kind of place that helped define the vibe of the surrounding neighbourhood. It exists as a compliment to the community and stands out from other establishments that are happy fitting into a rather homogenous culinary landscape. All of this to say, I have been a fan, a loyal customer, and someone who has recommended the Sunflower to others for the almost 50 years of its existence. Until today.

I joined two friends for lunch at The Sunflower Drive In this afternoon. The food was delicious as always, but the unparalleled level of rudeness and abject distain shown to our group by the staff of the Sunflower Drive In left me stunned and angry enough to promise never to return. The indignant rudeness we were subjected to was followed by the kitchen staff glaring and loudly talking about our group. We were seated at the inside dining room table and were stunned, confused, then deservedly angry by the almost unbelievable behaviour. To call our treatment wunprofessional, uncalled for, and unexcusable merely scratches the surface. I personally have never been treated so poorly by any restaurant ever, and if such unacceptable treatment towards customers continues, the Sunflower deserves to go out of business.

I can guarantee I will never go back, and nor will the friends who joined me. Those friends are also buisiness owners in the immediate vicinity of the Sunflower and I know they feel the same way as I do. I will never promote them or recommend them to anyone again. And I am fully aware that the Sunflower has plenty of both repeat and new customers... they don't need my money. Which is fine, because I will never spend my money there again. It's sad that to see how poorly they treat their customers and little they value...

WHAT A WEIRD EXPERIENCE.

I love this place and used to come here with grandma,, family, and all my out-of-town and in-town friends. This place is ICONIC for any Sacramentonian... but HOW FREAKING WEIRD.

Did it change ownership?

I know their popularity will not be impacted by this review, so writing it is probably more for my own processing than anything else. This is one of my favorite Sacramento spots and I have lived here nearly all my life. Now I feel ICKY and WEIRD about it.

Husband and I ordered super nut burgers and banana nut shakes.

On the FIRST SIP of my shake, I felt my tooth hit HARD against something that wasn't edible. A shell? I really thought I'd chipped my tooth. It was alarming enough that I wasn't sure I wanted to sip again. My husband also found hard bits of hard, inedible matter (again - guessing SHELL?) in his shake. This had never happened before.

We are both pretty awkward people that DO NOT like to ruffle feathers or inconvenience others. I wasn't sure I even wanted to say anything.

Thankfully, my husband - with both shakes only one sip less from when we got them - let her know what had happened. AND, THEN, WHAT? She served up the banana shake replacements and REPRIMANDED us!

"I won't replace this next time...I just had one of these last night and it was fine... maybe your teeth are too soft"

WHAT A WEIRD AND MEAN WAY to respond. They didn't even investigate the shakes themselves.

Sunflower employee, you really made us feel bad and just WEIRD about the SUNFLOWER....
