Where to start... No matter which door you come in you have to weave through the tables to get to the cashier hostess to be seated. The grill is also in the middle of the dining room. The 'chef' is the one who greeted us and asked if we had reservations, we did. She pointed in the direction of our table and said "we have you seated over there". We walked over to 3 empty tables and decided it must be the one with the paper menus on it. We were brought grilled bread right away by the chef and it was very good. Quite a long wait for our waitress but she was busy and all by herself. We ordered drinks and an a la carte entre as an appetizer. Which were also brought by the chef, 5 very large prawns in a plastic basket lined with paper. No small plates so we had to cut off bites while in the basket, awkward. The waitress finally came to take our meal order. We each ordered soup (the other choice was a trip to the salad bar. A 3ft tiny cramped bar where diners lined up amongst the tables. Again awkward.) As an entree we ordered the new york steak and calamari. Sorry, out of calamari. So then we ordered the ribeye, rare. She noted rare was red with a cool center so we switched to med rare, red with a warm center. Soup was served and Very good. When the steaks came they were med to med well. Not what we ordered but the flavor was ok. Didn't see the waitress for quite some time. When she came we said no dessert just the bill. Waited & waited. Finally, I got up and got our own to go container off the counter. Waitress was preparing several bills behind the register so I said I can just take care of that now. I paid, we left, full but...
Read moreBtw. My account was hacked so I am writing this now. Visited Dec.20th..see receipt. Great casual place in Penn Valley( off of highway 20). This place has been around 60+ years and is a local favorite. They have a full bar that is separate from the restaurant and is always busy. They open for dinner at 530 pm(make reservations!)
The food and service is awesome! I split a massive New Yorker that comes with one trip salad bar and fluffy baked potato AND garlic bread for 30 bucks! The food is cooked on an open fire where you can watch everything being cooked. The steak was juicy and definitely rivals any steak I have had at more expensive restaurants!
The wait staff is super friendly and work really hard. SPECIAL thanks to Leslie with her outstanding service and great attitude! Janelle and Tammy B were all working hard with a smile - from server to cook to bartender these 3 women were rocking it! This is a very casual place with the customers also being friendly and genuinely having a good time! My experience was top notch and I will be back soon...oh and it smells yummy in the restaurant! Good job Tack...
Read moreMy favorite place to get a steak dinner. You get a great value for your dollar; the atmosphere is rustic but I think holds a lot of charm. I’ve never had a bad meal here, the steaks are well marinated, the grilled garlic bread is always delicious, and I adore their homemade croutons and blue cheese dressing they have at the salad bar.
I’ve paid the price of two Tack Room steak dinners for one at Creekside in Nevada City, which came with no salad, no bread, and charged extra for a scoop of butter on top of your steak. Their wagyu was overcooked, under-seasoned and full of gristle. I cannot recommend the Tack Room in comparison to other restaurants that serve...
