Edit: I decided to come back 3 more times a year after my review. Place has gotten a lot better. Mainly the customer service and food which were my main complaints. Now this is my favorite restaurant in Canyon! The owner has seen the bad reviews, worked on them, and everything has been improved. I can say now that at the price point, it's now worth it!
It was great in the beginning but then it started going downhill on service [and in the kitchen] when we got the same waiter twice the last couple times. Same waiter that stayed talking to his customers and forgot about us. Because he was so busy talking to the customers, which were the same ones both visits, he wasn't paying attention if our food was ready or if we needed anything the first time I had him as a waiter. The friendly conversation made me feel like they were his parents since I saw him do this both times as our waiter. The second time he did the same but the pizza was left to get cold in the kitchen and it was the restaurant manager that brought out the pizza. We were helped by other employees both those visits and not the waiter for this reason, and both times our pizza was subpar. The other time they burned our pizza and had us wait an hour to get our food and they didn't give us an explanation til right before they gave us the pizza on why it took so long so we waited almost an hour. The kitchen messed up the pizza both times as well. The second time, today, they precooked the cauliflower crust and then put the toppings to barely heat the toppings so the meat was slightly undercooked when it should have been darker from getting cooked since we always asked for it extra crispy. This visit, while I watched him chatting away to his regular customers outside, our pizza got cold in the kitchen and we didn't complain about it because it was going to reflect in his tip [again], just like last time. I will never sit in this restaurant again. I will start going back to La Bellas where they are consistent and they cook the pizza well, with the ingredients on top so the meat and cheese gets cooked better too, and they consistently are the same on time. I recommend that waitstaff pay attention to customers instead of chatting away with their regular customers on the floor. I can't believe this happened twice in a row and we were the first customers in and saw his regular customers get their food first and another couple eat and leave before us. If at least the pizza was the way it was the first 2 times we went. I would have been able to tolerate the waiter but I rather not get cold pizza again AND deal with a waiter that's constantly chatting away the same customers while he's supposed to pay attention to his other tables as well. Consistency here is their main issue. Will it be red or orange marinara today? Cold or warm bread? Hard or soft bread? Parmesan or cheese bread? Watery or thick sauce? Hot or room temp entree? Floppy undercooked pizza or just right? Too little pizza toppings or just enough?
You never really know if you'll enjoy the meal you order because sometimes it's awesome and sometimes it's not. The prices here would be fine if it wasn't for this. I don't really think it's worth the price when half the time it's not as good and you don't want to wait for a correction. That being said, I still come here 2-4x a month since it's the only Italian food in Canyon and you really do get some amazingly cooked dishes.
If you order takeout, three things to note:
Upon entrance my Bride and I were warmly greeted by Ellie, a delightful personality whom you would have thought had just met long lost family. She escorted us to a beautiful forum for fine dining, seating the two of us at a table for four… absolutely appropriate. Almost on queue, Lily the serving assistant delivered fresh scrumptious bread with a kind smile and continued to keep our water glasses fresh and full throughout dinner. Moments later this darling person named Cait came and told us she would be taking care of us… and oh did she. Cait was available, attentive, and engaging. She moved about like an efficient time manager, taking our varied order accurately without writing down a thing. I told her I was going to tell on her… and I did… it scared her and it could be seen on her face. Derius the manager came by soon after… I asked him if he was the one I should talked to if I had a complaint… he said yes… I said good, cuz I don’t have one. I went on to tell him that from the time we entered Mickey’s Place, up until that very moment, my Bride and I had received amazing customer service… a model for all restaurants! He didn’t seem surprised at all… nor should he have been. And the food was drop dead good. I told him I wanted to kiss the cook… I came to my senses when he said the cooks name was Sam… Sam would have to settle for a knuckle bump.
