The more independent donut shops that I try in Pittsburgh, the more I appreciate what an amazing job that Madsen does (and the more I return to simply “GET A GOOD DONUT!”) Pittsburgh has a yeast-raised donut problem. Truly. I cannot tell you how frustrating it is to see multiple donut places pop up, and then never survive more than 1-2 years. Consistency issues. Location issues. Staff issues. For the past 10 years - it’s really hard to get a decent yeast-raised donut, and to also be able to depend on said business to deliver just during their posted business hours. I can name about a half dozen donut businesses that bit the dust in the past decade. AND - especially with current donut trends - you don’t need $40-50 to go in to Madsen. At Madsen, you can get yeast-raised donuts and cake donuts - which are both so fresh and out of this world. I love the yeast-raised cinnamon stick, but their marshmallow icing/filling is also unique and so delicious. I normally don’t like filled doughnuts, but I love theirs. The texture is so perfect. They are open when they say they are going to be open, their staff is friendly, and they have a parking lot for easy in and out. And a half dozen is $9. Perfect pricing. Also - I love that when you walk in - you can still see the baking equipment, and everyone working - showing you how fresh everything is. After all of the donuts I have tried, Madsen is it. They are the only one. As far as I am concerned, there are no other donut shops in Pittsburgh. The others...
Read moreSaturday April 20,2024 at 8am was my first time ever coming to this donut shop. I purchased a half dozen of donuts for $8.00. When I say that these donuts are the sexiest and most delectable donuts that i have every eaten. I purchased a cake donut with homemade marshmallow cream on top and shaved peanuts on top of that. The donut was crispy warm light and fluffy all at the same time. The homemade marshmallow cream topping with the shave peanuts on top paired nicely with it . It reminded me of the candy bar Payday. It was crunchy and creamy at the same time . The flavors definitely just seemed to meld together and form the perfect combination of flavors in my mouth. I also got a sugar coated jelly donut. The jelly was a Black raspberry flavor and I tasted this sweetness in every bite. The combination of the flavors lingered in my mouth for quit some time when I was done eating it but in a good way. Now let's get into this glazed donut. First the glaze, doesn't taste like your typical glaze for a donut. It has a sweetness and great flavor all its own. It didn't leave the heavy after taste or coating on my tongue. It was thinly layered on the donut like a thin sheet of ice on a barely frozen drink. The donut itself was crispy and gooey light and fluffy and it melted in my mouth. Yeah I know impossible for all that to be going on with one donut but I promise you that it's all possible. Waking up early on a Saturday and going to get donuts from Madsen Donuts was well worth it. Go get...
Read moreMy husband and I have actually been eating Madsen donuts since we were kids at their original location in Geneva, OH. We found out when we met as adults both our families vacationed there in the summer. When we heard they were adding a store in our hometown of Pittsburgh we freaked out. I always love their donuts (my favorite is the jelly filled), but I was now interested in using them for our wedding dessert instead of having cake. Donuts are always better than cake in my opinion. I worked with the owners and they were super helpful in accommodating my request and made everything so easy. My guest LOVED the different choices of donuts we had. Very fair price and they looked amazing. If you are looking for something a little different than cake then give Madsen a...
