Cancun Mexican Grill & Bar — Restaurant in Cedar Rapids

If I could give this place zero stars, I would.

Myself & a few others dined here last night (6/18/20). I actually went to meet my friends who were already dining there along with my roommate. I will also add that all five of us are of color because i feel like this was the reason for the employees actions & terrible service. My friends had been there for almost two hours before we arrived & still hadn’t received their food when I got there. Almost two hours for food? Ridiculous. When I asked if I could order food I was told “No, the kitchen closes in ten minutes.” Never have I ever been declined a food order at A RESTAURANT because they were too lazy to make anything. So, I just ordered one margarita instead & so did my roommate. I noticed a group of 4-5 being sat at another table behind me who were also given menus to order food. Weird. I thought the kitchen was closing? 🤔 Anyways, shortly after we received our drinks my friends FINALLY got their food. One of which was not cooked all the way & her shrimp was cold. She told the waiter who was not very sympathetic about it & just said “sorry“ & carried on. I asked another female waitress who stopped over if we could have some extra napkins....she never brought them instead she stood by that table of 4-5 & stared at us our entire rest of the time there. We finally decided to go elsewhere & paid for our stuff. My roommate actually paid for my drink & his so I walked out the door towards our cars. I was stopped by two male employees & harassed at their front door because “I didn’t pay for my drink.” I politely told him my roommate had the drink on his bill which he paid for which my roommate also told the man as well but, instead he kept waving the bill in my face & interrupting me when I was trying to explain. This went on for a good ten minutes. I repeatedly explained to the man that all of our stuff had been paid for & he need to not harass me anymore. When he finally got the message & walked away he told me that us & all of our friends were banned from the restaurant. Why? Because you were in the wrong for terrible service, harassment, cold food, & etc? Instead of apologizing or their sh*y service we were banned over a one drink bill that was paid for 🤦🏾‍♀️ great service, Cancun. Great service. The service is really bad. I'm a 20 to 25 % tipper and have never walked out without tipping. Cancun was recommended to me by a person staying at the hotel where I am. I took the last seat at the bar on the far right side and asked for the menu of drinks and Margaritas. I was given a square laminated piece of paper with no description of the drinks. I just ordered a Margarita on the rocks with salt because the inattentive bartender wouldn't tell me about their 'Special Margaritas ' after I asked him. I ordered Ceviche. He did not ask if I wanted tostadas or crackers, so I had to tell him. My food finally arrived, it has been nearly 60 minutes and he has not looked at me, asked if my food was all right, or asked if I would like more to drink. He's more invested in the game and regulars. He has no clue that I've owned a waterfront bar and grill, plus tip well. He only sees me as a woman who likely won't tip well. I came here as a recommendation, but the service is horrible. The WORST SERVICE. The idiot bartender who ignored me said that he didn't 'bother me' because I was on my phone. REALLY? I was watching the Iowa game and eating. The only time I was 'on my phone was while I was writing this scathing review. After hearing many rave reviews about Cancun being the best of the many, many local Mexican restaurants we tried this place. Unfortunately the reviews were not lived up to. Food was ok, but honestly nothing special or great and the so called crab listed in menu items like the enchiladas I ordered is only imitation crab (which I'm fine with), but not labeling it correctly seems misleading. The "crab" also had a weird slightly brownish hue that I normally do not encounter. Food was definitely not better than other similar restaurants nearby. Service was friendly, but lacking in attention at times. Possibly weird and minor complaints include the grating loud noises of chairs scraping the floor every time someone moved into or from their seat, the annoyance of drinking straws being too short to reach the bottom of tall glasses (such as the glass a Pina Colada is served in) leaving me unable to enjoy the last bit of my drink without foregoing the use of the straw altogether and large marble sized chunks of ice scattered throughout my frozen drink which were obviously too big to fit through the already lacking straw.
