I ate here in March 2017, just a few weeks after new owners took over. If you had been to the restaurant before that, its like night and day. I don't think the new owners did a total remodel, but it looks completely different and much, much more upscale (and much cleaner!).
Food was excellent, and service was spot-on. I had the brisket sandwich and a salad, and others had burgers. I didn't expect a place like this to do barbecue well, but the brisket sandwich was one of the best sandwiches I've had in North Carolina. Awesome! My only critique was that the fries were inconsistent - some were crispy, others were a bit soft. That said, they were obviously homemade and not packaged. And the salad was fresh, bright, and good. I'll definitely be back to try the burgers, although I may just have the same sandwich again.
Update 3/4/2019: I’ve been coming to Flair since it’s opened and continue to love the food and environment. The roasted chicken (with asparagus, potatoes, and a beurre blanc sauce) is still one of my favorite meals. I’m writing an update here because Flair opened an extension of the restaurant – sort of a ‘sister restaurant’ with a different vibe and menu – called Flair Fusion. This is also HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
While you can access it directly from Flair (there’s a door that connects the restaurant) you can also go into Fusion through its own front door. Fusion is much smaller and more intimate, with a nice bar and a completely different menu. While parts of the menu focus on Latin food and parts on Asian food (noodles, stir-fries, etc.) there is also a wide selection of other cuisines with Brazilian and European influences. In a lesser restaurant that may not work well, but everything here is interesting and creative, as well as tasty and beautifully presented. Really impressive. It’s like a high-end, diverse tapas bar but with real portions and very fair prices.
It’s a very hip, cool vibe and would work for both a semi-casual dinner or a nice date night. Everything I’ve had is good and you can get something no matter what mood you’re in. I’m so glad a place like this is in the...
Read moreDisappointing meal for two couples. Not a disaster but not worth the prices. Took three tries selecting a wine from the wine list that they actually had. Not a great list anyway. How difficult is it to put a stick-on red dot by selections not available (they admitted that they had none of the organic wines listed, about a dozen purported selections). Service was very uneven. Lots of food but not particularly well prepared. I had a chicken Milanese but the batter was overdone to a very dark brown/black. It had the salad greens and cherry tomatoes that typically accompany fried meat cutlets Milanese, but it was served on gnocchi that were very dense and with a heavy cream pesto. Beet salad was good. Fried calamari was good and generous portion. Main courses were unimpressive. The manicotti dishes were mediocre and lacking in flavor. If you can be patient and want a lot of so-so food to fill up - this could be the place for you. I would admit we all four are lovers of good food and cook very well at home. We were there on a Saturday night after a UNC home basketball game, so most of the better Chapel Hill restaurants were full. Flair was the only upscale restaurant in the area that had reservations available. That might have been a clue we should...
Read moreThe energy in this place was way off in here...again. About six months ago, we tried it for the first time for dinner. The service was extremely slow, the food was decent (but not worth the $), and the basil ice cream was delicious. Tonight, the inexperience of the waitstaff showed, the owner seemed more interested in selling a pasty than seating customers, and every dish that arrived was wrong. The coconut shrimp had three sautéed shrimp on a bed of white rice. They would have tasted better if the rice would have been cooked instead of hard. The kale salad had to be returned and fixed to not include gluten as requested, the beef tenderloin added to it was tender and tasty, but was cooked medium, not medium-rare as requested. We also had the citrus salad that tasted ok until we realized that it was served without the honey and candied walnuts. While we were sharing our dishes, an extra plate(s) could have been offered instead of eating from the same bowl from across the table. (Yes, we could have requested one earlier.) The server was very nice and helpful, it’s just too bad the kitchen staff failed! We hear they have a good brunch. You give it a try, and let us know how it is...We...
