Headed to Home Team BBQ on SI yesterday. Covid policies and procedures are in place and while trying to find parking on SI is sometimes a drag, it didn’t deter us from going. The staff is very welcoming and attentive. My husband ordered the chopped brisket sandwich with the golden mustard BBQ sauce along w/ a side of baked beans and I ordered a cup of the smoked onion soup and a crispy carnitas taco. I was under the assumption that the “crispy” pork was going to be crisped up in the skillet but I was very wrong. The carnitas taco has finely chopped up bits of cracklings mixed into the carnitas so that with every bite you take, there is a definitive crunch. A squeeze of lime over the carnitas, chopped onion and cilantro completed this neat package. For food that is usually so simple, this just takes it to a whole new level. The onion soup had a smokey essence to it and it added to the depth & richness. My husband said that the brisket was chopped very well (some places do not chop brisket uniformly) and it was overall moist. If you can go to a Home Team BBQ location while you are in the Charleston area (SI or downtown) you should, it never disappoints.

Visiting from out of town and this was a suggested stop. I was glad I made it. The dry rub chicken wings were fantastic! The rest of my party were impressed with the white sauce served with them, but I was not. I ate them dry. I order the pulled pork sandwich with mac & cheese and collard greens. The pulled pork was on point. I'm not a fan of vinegar in my collards, but I ate them all anyway. If I've ever had better mac & cheese I couldn't tell you when it was. It was perfect. I'm also not in love with SC style bbq sauce, but theirs wasn't bad. My favorite thing about Home Team was that they waited on the table in a traditional fashion. We were seated, the server brought drinks, took our order, brought food and then the check. I really despise the model that seems to be prevalent in that area where you order and pay a tip at the register and then fetch your own drinks. I'd rather eat here than Lewis for that reason.

The place is very cool and the service was great. The food on the other hand left a lot to be desired for me. My dad got the turkey wrap which he said was very good but I got the 3 meat plate and not all of it was worth it. The 3 meat plate I got was pulled chicken, a cheddar jalapeño sausage, and sliced brisket and for my sides I got mac and cheese and hash and rice. The pulled chicken and the sausage were both very good especially with their great sauces that they make but the brisket was kind of hard to eat which made it disappointing, essentially considering I paid extra for it. The sides were pretty good although the hash and rice was better than the mac and cheese for me. Overall worth the visit if you like southern food but I recommend not getting the brisket.

I ordered the Brunswick stew collard greens and brisket slider . The stew was cold and very dense almost nothing but broth . The collard greens were good. The best thing on the menu was the kids chicken tenders. When I informed the manager of the cold food she did offer some banana pudding which I decided as this was a family outing Easter dinner after church at that . The server then approached the table with the bill no discount no nothing the server as well slammed the handheld in my hand and stormed off. I then asked for the manager again LOU and she was adamant that I would pay full price . She was by far not customer sevice friendly but did offer a gift card in The amount of $15 ...fair enough as I had eaten the cold food as I didnt see my server and I was starving after Easter church services. 😅 on the upside of things my granddaughter age 4 enjoyed the music and her kids chicken temders and Mac and cheese ....never in a million years would I jave expected this today as I am a frequent flyer and love home team bbq typically when i do come ...and in all my years do I never tip but this was one for the books 📚 however the GOD in me still decided to leave something... Very very disappointed 😞 Will try again .... Another day perhaps . After all I do have a $15 gift card ;)) so thank you LOU...

Disappointing Experience at Home Team BBQ

My recent visit to Home Team BBQ left much to be desired. Despite high expectations, the reality fell short on multiple fronts.

Firstly, the smoked turkey and ribs, touted as specialties, were a letdown. Both dishes were inexplicably hard and dry, lacking the succulence and tenderness expected from quality barbecue.

The disappointment extended to the sides, notably the Mac and cheese, which failed to deliver on flavor, leaving a bland impression.

Service added to the dismay, as the staff neglected to inform us that the sodas provided were bottled with no option for refills. This lack of transparency led to an unexpected additional cost and inconvenience, as we had to order alternative drinks to quench our thirst.

Moreover, the disregard from our server was evident when we had to fetch our own straws from the bar, highlighting a lack of attentiveness and care towards customers.

Regrettably, the aftermath of the meal was marred by upset stomachs experienced by all four diners, indicating possible issues with food quality or preparation.

Overall, my experience at Home Team BBQ was far from satisfactory. The combination of subpar food, lackluster service, and subsequent discomfort leaves little desire for a...

Per the usual, the food is great. It always is. The service is great. Alas, there is a growing trend of which I contend people need to be apprised: the passing of merchant fees, a cost of doing business, to the customer. This may seem trivial to some and, if so, then so be it. The current economic climate is challenging for customers and businesses alike. That said, I champion transparency, which is a component of integrity in business. To add to Brian Garrett’s review from three weeks ago, there is still not adequate transparency at Home Team regarding passing the merchant processing fee, or surcharge, of 3.25% to the customer: no post on the door, no mention from the server. A small mention at the bottom of the menu where many may not notice being the only effort to inform customers of this added charge is inadequate. 3.25% of the bill may, again, seem trivial to some, but what matters first is the principle. While it is legal to pass this fee to the customer in 40 states, adequate notice is expected so the customer is offered the opportunity to better choose their method of payment. As costs are increasing for businesses, if absolutely necessary then the transparency of slightly raising menu prices may be the...
