Intimate, tasting kitchen experience with delicious food and good vibes. Came here on a group of six girls by recommendation of a friend who previously visited R Itchen and has glowing reviews. Our reservation was set for 6 but we had arrived early. We were planning on killing time but we were welcomed in by Chef Ross and Rosie. Beer and wine are included for the meal (set price of $45 per person) which was incredible. There was a white and red option plus an Ugni Blanc that was my favorite. You sit in a circular bar and get you watch your food being prepped right in front of you. The menu changes each day according to what local ingredients are available and it’s a cool way to see creativity at play.
Chef Ross was amazing and clearly really passionate about food. The food we had below included the following:
Greek salad with lentil egg roll - very well dressed and solid flavor for the egg roll. Chef Ross called it a happy little accident and it was truly a good accident that he decided to overcook the lentils but fried them up.
Local shrimp - came with a green sauce and were mellow and juicy.
Beef - nicely braised and tender - one of the girls didn’t eat red meat and was allergic to fish so he made a chicken version with the same flavor profile.
Brussel sprouts with Georgia bacon - my favorite part of the meal. It came well dressed with a creamy hollandaise sauce band the bacon was super fatty and flavorful.
Chocolate soufflé - a decadent ending to the night. It came drizzled with honey and was just the right amount of sweet. There were crushed almonds that we also got to sample that were high quality and were a special variety. I asked if he had an extra that he could give to me as a joke, and he actually packed an extra for me! I was so touched.
They do take credit card and you pay after the meal is finished. They don’t rush you but there is another group that starts at 8pm so be mindful for that. There’s a parking lot in the back and there’s one single stall restroom in the back. Overall, this was one of the highlights of the trip. It’s reasonably priced but such high quality, and the relaxed atmosphere and kindness of Chef Ross made for a...
Read moreWOW!!! This place definitely deserves more than five stars! It is quite an experience to dine here. They have a fixed menu at a fixed price (I think $65-$70 per person?); usually five courses; and all Chef's Choice. Bottles of wine are already at the bar when patrons arrive -- included in the fixed price. You MUST CALL to make reservations. They only have two seatings: 6pm and 8pm.
Dining at R Kitchen is truly a whole new dining experience for me. Very casual atmosphere -- you sit at a bar and chat with other patrons and the chefs who are preparing and plating your food right in front of you. The chefs also talk about what's in the dishes they're serving, what inspired it, etc. It's part of the experience to sit down and guess what's on the menu that evening (they post clues on a board at the restaurant). And you don't know which chef you're getting that night either as they rotate. We've been there at least eight or more times in the past year, and ALL the chefs are amazing!
The owner, Ross, is a gregarious, generous, accommodating, and hilariously entertaining individual. He is also an amazing chef! Chris, Justin and Alex are some of the other chefs whose culinary creations we've had the pleasure of trying. And can't forget how wonderful Lindsay is all the time.
They will gladly accommodate folks with dietary restrictions; just let them know when you make reservations; however, the chefs will also ask you when you get to the restaurant. It is always so impressive to me to watch them come up with alternative dishes on the fly.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this place! It is easily our favorite restaurant in foodie town Charleston! We will keep...
Read moreWe dined at R Kitchen last night, and it was AMAZING. Chef LaLa set the atmosphere for a fantastic evening. The chefs were all incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. They were happy to talk and share about ingredients, techniques, their histories in the kitchen. It all added to a fantastic experience on top of absolutely delicious food. The chefs create a new menu every night based on what they find in their shopping that day, so every time you visit will be a new experience. Our first course was the best salad I have had in my entire life, and the only time I have enjoyed eating beets. The second course was a delicious tomato chicken soup. Third course was a super tender flank steak on top of an eye-rollingly good coconut peanut sauce served with red cabbage, Bok choy, and mushrooms. Fourth course was a perfectly smoked pork loin with a blueberry reduction, a corn and sweet potato hash, Brussel sprouts, and a sauce made out of potatoes that was so creamy and yummy. The fifth and final course was an amazing pot de crème of cinnamon chocolate topped with vanilla whipped cream, berries, and mint. The entire meal was served with a deliciously paired Pinot Noir. I have to comment on the amazing knowledge of the chefs in regards to dietary restrictions. Chef LaLa made me feel incredibly welcome and comfortable eating the food prepared. I will absolutely be back. This was an amazing experience and one I would recommend to anyone who loves to try new food and enjoys a welcoming and fun environment with professionals who are amazing in...
