Checking out one of the latest breweries to open in Charleston: Munkle Brewing.
They specialize in the Belgian styles, which just happen to be my favorite. Built brand new from the ground up, nice modern building instead of some of the more traditional "lived in" breweries around; each style has its plusses I suppose.
Their beer is especially clean tasting, much like Cooper River Brewing, but in a lighter, more sessionable profile. This is great for people just getting into better beers because they are not overly pungent like some of the 400 ibu IPAs that are in vogue currently.
A lot of new breweries tend to have a common underlying flavor between all their beers that probably comes from incomplete sanitizing of the equipment between brews. These guys have totally avoided that, probably the owners experience with brewing at a monastery previously.
I'm looking forward to what these guys come up with in the future; I'm hoping for a tripel or saison which are also complex, yet light...
Read moreThis is the first Abbey brewery in Charleston, making it truly unique. The blonde and pale ale were crisp and flavorful, I'll put them up against any other local brewery. The Wit was outstanding, citrus herbal finish, definitely a favorite among many at the bar. The Brune was the best, similar to a Bière de Garde. It had a slight dark fruit flavor up front, but finished nicely with an apple spice flavor. All 4 tasted uniquely "Belgian", i.e., an uncommon complexity.
The only suggestion I would make is to have more Trappist Ales...Dubbel, Tripel, and Belgian Dark Strong. I understand these will be available later in a rotation, but selfishly, I'd like to see them year round.
There is no doubt they are passionate about bringing you an authentic Abbey or Trappist style beer that you won't find at 20+ other breweries...
Read moreIt seems to be hard lately to find a new-ish brewery that produces creative, but traditional craft beers at such a high level. This isn’t hyperbole. This brewery is producing three impressive styles of beer with incredible craft and precision. The Belgian style beers are true to the process and yet adapted to the unique climate of Charleston, SC. The Belgian Brown is drinkable on a hot summer day, but also so wonderfully complex to be paired with a nice filet or some local shrimp and grits. The Pils is German perfection. The two American style ales I tried were also perfect. No pallet wreckers! Craft is alive and well at this brewery and it’s a lovely place to drop in for an afternoon. Can’t wait to come back and try some of the other special offerings at...
