Food was amazing. Staff was pretty rude. I know they were really busy, so taking that into account, and the fact that I own a busy cafe in Virginia Beach, I still feel there is no excuse for being rude to customers.
They ran out of avocado, which was no big deal, we asked for bell pepper substitutions. After this was resolved, another employee came to the table to inform us we were out of avocado (again) and in a condescending tone, said they would substitute the bell peppers 'this time', as if doing us a favor that was out of the ordinary. The manager was brought over to let us know they wouldn't charge one of the girls in our group for avocado, but she had already paid out on the app, the manager was huffing and although she said she would get it taken off, the erratic energy from her was felt by all of us, and she slammed down the sanitizer bottle on her way into the kitchen. It's not full service- one of those places you order on your phone. Still, I wanted to leave a tip for the only employee that wasn't rude. When I gave her some money and explained everyone else was rude but she made our experience more enjoyable, she got annoyed and told me they were really busy and one of their managers has a brain tumor, as if I should be more understanding and accepting the rude attitudes we received.
I thought that response was totally unnecessary and it made me wish I didn't tip her. I decided to hold my tongue in telling her I'm a restaurant owner --our main cook suffers from seizures on a weekly basis, and we still give better service. I will never be back to this diner.
This is the service industry---making your customers feel inferior and with such a lack of gratitude, when we are the ones contributing to their livelihood is not a place I want to...
Read moreWe have been to Blue Moon numerous times and its typically a nice experience and good food. Our experience under their new no reservation model was really bad. I believe they were understaffed 9n that day which is understandable and forgiveable but the manager's frustration with their lack of staffing was projected onto us when she cam whisking by to serve us our food, and that is not forgiveable. My bacon was grossly undercooked, we asked for cream for our coffee and she borderline rudely pointed to the creamer with her back turned saying "its right there," (the cream was grossly curdled and just swam and danced in our coffee, causing is to take the cream and coffee to the staff since we didn't have a staff serving us.) The plastic cups looked a little dirty, the table was sticky, we had no waters, the food came before the coffee, and it wasn't clear what part of the breakfast experience was us being served vs us having to serve ourselves (getting water, a refill of tea, getting our own silverware, condiments, etc.) I'm pro small business, so this all would have been forgiveable if the staff would have acknowledged the inconvenience and apologized for their inability to properly serve us due to their own staffing issues. This was a bad experience, and we had two out of town guest with us as well. We have choices as to where we will eat here in Charlottesville and I qould choose...
Read moreJuly 24' Update: Ah, Blue Moon Diner—once a celestial beacon in the Charlottesville dining constellation, now seems more like a waning star. With hopeful nostalgia, I ordered my old favorite: eggs over easy with home fries. What arrived, however, was a culinary lament. The home fries, far from the crisp delight I remembered, were buried under a lackluster avalanche of canned tomatoes, their tinny flavor unmistakable. To add to the dismay, melted cube-sliced cheese precariously perched atop the eggs, a far cry from the culinary finesse one would expect.
To add insult to injury, my server vanished into the ether, leaving my coffee cup parched and yearning for a refill that never came. While the Blue Moon Diner once twinkled brightly in my gastronomic memories, this recent visit was a cosmic misstep. If only preparing home fries didn’t demand such temporal investment, I’d whip up superior eggs and brew a finer coffee in my kitchen.
Dear Blue Moon, please rediscover your former brilliance. Until then, this diner dream remains eclipsed.

I cherish this brunch "must" for Cville's best restaurants. I've been coming for a few years, and honestly, the service and food are better every time! A relaxed vibe is felt when you're welcomed at the front door. I recommend the pancakes, and the mocha Joe is a must during the colder weather. Great job,...
