The pastries are wonderful here! Went to get two of their chocolate cake slices. One for me and my mom. I always love to support local business and have frequented Gearharts for their desserts.
This review is solely regarding the same woman who has been forgetful with bagging an item and then being adamant it’s been given:
When I asked where the second bag was, the cashier stated she already handed it to me. I conveyed it wasn’t and then I was gaslit into being told it indeed was, and that I’d have to wait until my mom came out of the restroom (insinuating my mom took a slice of cake in there).
The cashier reiterated and insisted that I was already given the second bag when only one was handed to me. She came back with another woman who approached the register and then asked if I would like the slice (the one I paid for).
I think the atmosphere and quaint location is great. Maybe a little kindness + retraining on customer relations for the employee working on the register. I wouldn’t write a review as such but this was the second time this happened with the same employee.
Having experienced this combative energy, I wouldn’t come here again despite their cakes being good! It’s nice to be able to enjoy some desert- not be gaslit and greeted with a...
Read moreI live in Richmond, so when I buy Gearharts for myself, I go to their shop on Libbie in Richmond, which is presumably equally yummy and delightful. But mostly I order online as a gift for someone I'm trying to impress. People I'm trying to impress say Gearharts is the best. I love it too, but theirs is the opinion that really matters. Anyhow, people who matter adore Gearharts. I order a selection of all the dark truffles. If you try to be more precise, be my guest, but the selections are rare and distinctive, so if you haven't tried it before, you maybe can't understand what it's like in real life. So if you haven't been to the shop in person, you probably want to order a selection. The website isn't optimal, but the service is great if there is a problem and you explain the situation. If there is a problem, typically, either it's that the website didn't give you the option of specifying the shipping date. If you order for Valentine's Day, that's not an issue. But for a birthday or anniversary, you need to TELL THEM the date for shipment. Also, I didn't see an option for a gift card/inscription. This is absolutely not a problem. You just need to email them to explain the situation and they...
Read moreGreat to see them expand, there literally isn't a business in charlottesville I have more adoration for. They have a beautiful new store, you can watch them make the chocolate and it's as beautiful as you would expect. It is worth every penny, it is more art than chocolate. Best chocolate this side of the ocean,
Only complaint is the sort of grumpy owner. I get it, I don't like people either, but leave your very competent friendly employees to run the front. It's great chocolate, but he is no people person. He always seems sort of horrified by people (that varies from horrified to moderately annoyed). He seems to smile a bit more for the ladies who come in dressed up, but listen here buddy, I dress like a farmer, I drive a cheap truck, but I'm the one who spends several thousand dollars on chocolate every year because PRIORITIES! Luckily I adore all the employees, BUT if it was more than occasionally him there I'd just skip...
