Excellent food, friendly helpful staff, reasonable prices (appetizer, two entrees, dessert, and tea $40). Simple, yet elegant setting. Dined at 3pm on a chilly Sunday afternoon. Server asked how spicy hot each of us wanted our entree. One was extra hot, the other slightly hot. When the dishes arrived the spicyness was perfect in each! I tried the house special, Tiffin Biriyani, which came with flavorful chunks of meat in nicely spiced Basmatti rice in a generous size metal bowl that kept warm for the entire meal. The waiter, considerately, provided a small side dish of raita to temper the taste! My partner had Tandoori shrimp which were nicely grilled and had the extra hot spiciness requested. There were plenty good sized shrimp with veggies. We shared an appetizer, Eggplant Chatt. There were nicely coated bite-sized slices with delicious sauce. The waiter kept our water glasses full, and was attentive, without being intrusive. There were only ourselves and another table at the time. That may have allowed extra service; however, they showed a sensibility for service that would be necessary to have good service when more busy. The menu is coded to show dishes as vegetarian, vegan, dairy free, gluten free, or containing nuts. This is good for anyone with dietary considerations. It easy to reach at the intersection of Church Road and Old York Road. We will be going back, especially when we want to...
Read moreI’ll preface this by saying I was never a huge fan of Indian food until this past year when I went with my family to an Indian buffet for my cousin’s graduation dinner and discovered there were multiple non-spicy options available. Fast forward about 6 months and I’m out to dinner with my family again, though this time, at Tiffin. I had heard of them but had never eaten at any of their locations before, so I checked the menu on their website to make sure there was something I was comfortable ordering. Surely enough, there were plenty of options. We arrived, were seated, and ordered a few varieties of naan as an appetizer. That being said, however, it took a bit longer than we would’ve liked for it to arrive at our table, but when it did, it was worth the wait. I especially enjoyed the tamarind dipping sauce. For my main course, I ordered the malai tikka (chicken marinated in a very light sour cream/cream cheese mixture) and got a few bites of my dad’s chicken tikka masala—since we asked for everything to be mild, they honored that and I was so grateful. As far as the service, there were only 2 people working front of house so it wasn’t exactly prompt; though they do get more take-out business than eat-in so it would’ve been nice if the wait had been slightly shorter. Other than that, I’d return, but likely just...
Read moreDon't Buy Gift Certificate Chances are good no meal will come of it. We tried & tried, receiving run arounds on the phone, in person, on the Web & from third parties who claim to handle the process. Phone with some Philly Tiffin: "You have to come in person." In person at Elkins Park: "Use the online link." On the Web: Website contains no link, not even in the site map, but creative Googling actually found a link to a third party - in fact several third parties who will take your money.
My wife made all these attempts including giving her credit card # to a third party who commenced emailing her for additional financial institution information - so we've abandoned that route. Banks says if a charge shows up on our credit card bill we can dispute it then.
I'm told a relative had previously bought a Tiffin Gift Certificate but it was refused at the local restaurant. (We figured that had to be a fluke. Joke on us).
I've never tasted the food so you'll have to consult other reviews for that. But the Tiffin chain clearly can't handle Gift Certificants so should just admit it instead of lying & being generally incompetent about it.
For the general public's sake you can only hope their food comes with less...
