I have a theory, in two parts. If the decor is too well done, the food isn't, and if the decor isn't stereotypical, the food is going to be some modernist, fusion nightmare. Not the exciting kind, the kind steeped in regret.
This place shatters all expectations. The decor is familiar if you have roots in a Spanish speaking country, but not in the stereotyped way. Like your most glamorous Tia opened a exquisite supper club that's impeccably decorated, modern, and cohesive. It's both relaxing and exciting to walk inside. Peaceful and energizing. I don't know who pulled that off and how but they nailed a whole vibe.
We missed hotel breakfast and today is a lazy day after weeks of chaos. For me that means one thing: find cafe de olla someplace with great food. They nailed that too.
Right off the bat, their chips are fresh and delicate and their salsa has a nice but mellow bite. Normally I'm shoveling a tablespoon or adding some salsa picante of some sort to even taste like salsa but this I had to be a little restrained. Perfect.
The cafe de olla smells like heaven when they bring it to your table and will instantly revive you. Will will come in handy at the end of your meal because the portions are massive. Luckily breakfast is served until 2, so we weren't too late.
My husband got the chilaquiles roja, which were delicious. Their papas guisa that come with the breakfasts are so delicious, as are the refried beans. I had the huevos con chorizo which was incredible. Just what I needed to start my day.
Just as a metric, yesterday I got a very mediocre sandwich at Corner Bakery which was nearly the same price and about 1/3 as much food. I took home my leftovers and it's enough for an entire other breakfast.
The only thing I could complain about is their eggs in the huevos con chorizo are cooked a little more thus a little dry than I'm used to but that's a family choice thing. My husband got scrambled with his chilaquiles and they were much lighter and fluffier. And the chorizo tends to deflate eggs anyway. It's literally just a preference thing and what you grew up with.
Others mention the cafe de olla is very sweet. Ours was too. It wasn't distractingly so, but I do have to watch my blood sugar so I couldn't finish mine. But it was delicious and made me happy so it's a fair sacrifice. Just a chance to practice some moderation, and too much caffeine makes me jittery anyway.
They have some really delicious and authentic things you don't find on other menus, and I am super tempted to go back tonight for dinner because they have an Ube margarita that sounds like the most amazing kind of fusion and I need to try it. And a shrimp dish on the features board on the table that I also want to try.
Plus they have a bunch of delicious looking Appetizers.
Definitely will come back when I'm in town because it's not just a great meal (and it is 1000% a great meal), it's an experience and a flawless one at that.
Such a perfect way to...
Read moreI got off work a little earlier than usual, and my friends and I wanted to share a brew (or two). So many recommendations for a happy hour bucket of beers pop up in Google maps that it can be overwhelming, especially when you have four or five bros joining you. Because we are so dispersed around the Inland Empire, I asked Google for a centrally located place that has good food and beer at a great price. Casa Diaz popped up a few places down the list. It wasn't at the top, and for good reason. I took the 18-minute drive from work to South Ontario off Euclid and Schaffer to this really nice, expensive looking, opulent, clean, and well staffed bar and grill. Wow. Amazing atmosphere, beautiful people, kind and hospitable waiting staff. I am impressed, to say the least. I ordered up a Modelo Especial 16oz draft brew and was given a generous portion of chips and salsa. The chips were good, and the salsa was nice and salty to go down with that brew. I know that this was around 3 pm in the afternoon, and it probably gets crowded here later, but I it had a great first impression. More friends decided to come so I got a table. I retired from the bar stool and asked to get a table. The bar maid said yes, go ahead, but please close out your tab. I agreed and handed her my debit card. Wow! $7 for a 16 oz beer? This was happy hour, and a 12 oz bottle of domestic was $6! I could only imagine what regular price is. Well, I settled up, paid, changed seats, and got a call to go outside with my bros and drink a few $1 cans of the domestic greatest and then returned to spend quite a bit of money here. If you have clients to impress with some of the local businesses and want to make an impression where money is no cost, come here. You can drop a few thousand in one night like that! If you want a place where food and drink are normally priced like a dive bar $4, do not come. You will be upset at the cost and may decide to drink one and leave. I could see bringing a first-time date here, or maybe celebrating an anniversary with your wife or husband here, but this place is not for the working man or woman. This is expensive and...
Read moreI’ve been to Casa Diaz and brought my family on occasions . On my recent visit, I came in with my husband and our 2-year-old daughter. She placed some gummies inside one of the small porcelain flower pots at the table—a harmless action that we’ve done before without issue.
The server immediately questioned us aggressively about the flower pot, and shortly after, the manager (who claimed to be the owner) approached us with even more hostility, insisting we return it before it broke—accusing us of trying to take it or damage it, which was never the case. We had received our food yet, maybe took one bite
Despite this, we still left $100 before walking out due to the disrespect and unprofessional behavior. What shocked me most was the lack of grace, understanding, or basic customer care—especially from someone claiming to be the owner.
As a fellow business owner, I can confidently say this is not how loyal patrons or families with children should be treated. It’s disappointing to be treated like a problem over a small, replaceable décor item—especially in a place we once enjoyed supporting.
A a business owner myself I would NEVER treat my customers (the consumer) Ever this Way ! We’re in business, because of our customers! We’ll NEVER be back ! & I will NEVER recommend or talk. Good about this place.
YES I was kicked out because of course I’m upset !your trippin on my kid ! And YES I got loud and I demanded my change back !
Cannot believe this happened here and to my family !
Maybe , they need to have a sign in the Front. That says no kids allowed. Or don’t touch of porcelain plastic ...
