Sugar Ray's BBQ — Restaurant in Chowchilla

If i dont stop here at least twice a month i failed my stomach. I never review restaurants, but after over a year of great bbq, i owe them some love.

The pit master is brilliant. He has introduced new sauces that are great with the quesadilla, recommends specials or off menu items they are trying out, etc. I havent had a bad recommendation yet. The 3 person lunch crew staff is friendly, professional, and welcoming.

The food... I always get the three meat combo - tri tip, ribs, brisket. Ive never been dissapointed. I also fully endorse the tri tip sandwhich and jalapeno mac side. But my go to is almost always the three meat combo.

1 and only complaint... The pork belly needs to be on the menu always. Ive had it as a special a few times. To me, it is the best thing not on the menu.

If I could give this place negative stars, I would. We had been looking forward to eating here and my husband picked up our first order on 4/20. The food was very good, but my husband got food poisoning. Very bad food poisoning that lasted several days. We narrowed this down to the pork ribs. This means that this restaurant improperly cooked/handled the ribs. We know that it was the ribs as he and I had the exact same diet for a few days until dinner that night. I had chicken and he the ribs. We had the same sides. I did not get sick. His food poisoning began that evening and lasted until the next week. Thankfully he did not have to be rushed to the ER. Pretty good bbq but they were out of ribs. I had the brisket and hot link sandwich. I would eat it again. Interesting way to make mac and cheese, a little gritty not as creamy as I'd like. Maybe a little too much cheddar. Good service. Once again out of town on business, but I would definitely go back to try more of their menu. And the slaw on the sandwich was a new treat and I would like try it by it's self. They actually had apple slivers in the slaw and I liked it. Pretty good sauce, I would have liked more sauce and slaw on the sandwich. Next time I'm in Chowchilla Ca I'm going back....
