While on our road trip south we became hungry of course. Also while being in rural country all you see are the usual fast food signs next to the highway. So we pulled off the road in Hayti, MO and traveled inward about quarter of a mile before finding where the locals eat. We see this small red building with a cartoon-like pig painted on the side with the words Chubby's BBQ!
Atmosphere was quaint & rustic as it should be for a local BBQ eats. The interior is essentially all plywood with various signs from companies such as gasoline and other businesses. A few signed t-shirts, a banner talking about the town and various pig figurines, signs and even had a Christmas tree decorated with pigs topped off with a pig with wings tree topper. Plenty of seating and a pretty stellar menu to boot. The two ladies serving everyone were very welcoming and helpful. Plus several locals came in while we were there. Proving we came to the right place.
Now onto the food! Like I said above, there's plenty to choose from on the menu. Chose unsweet tea to drink and it tastes excellent. Very large cup as well! Your food comes out on one of those heavy-duty Styrofoam divided 10"inch plates. Believe me when I say "you won't see much of that plate". The amount of food you get is astonishing and you'll definitely leave with some leftovers. Or very full!!! Now I've had some good BBQ. But when I can honestly say this is the "Best I've ever had"! That's saying something. It was the most succulent, moist & juiciest BBQ I have ever tasted. We tried the chopped pork sandwich w/ homemade potato salad & coleslaw. (Side Note: the coleslaw is oil & vinager based where its got that nice little twang to it. So good!) Also tried the Baby Back Ribs Platter. Once again had the homemade coleslaw & their Chubby's fries. The ribs covered half the plate. I was able to just pull the meat apart without any effort. Pull the bones right out cleanly. AMAZING I tell you!
Definitely stopping back by on our way back home.
Can't forget about "Desert": 3 delicious pies are on the menu. French Silk pie, Pecan pie & Peanut Butter pie. We had the Peanut Butter pie and let me tell you right now. The pie was rich & creamy, graham cracker crust. So good!
You most definitely won't be disappointed by stopping by this local eat! A must go to!
PS: I did notice a sign stating their closed Sunday and Monday. So keep that in mind...
Read moreI'm from TX, so I'm used to pretty good BBQ. Everyone is always raving about Mizzou BBQ, so I thought I'd give it a try while driving through on the way to a project in Illinois. I crossed over into Mizzou from Arkansas, and saw the sign for" the best ribs in town". Not even if they were the only ribs in town, but I digress. My 1st clue of the impending disappointment was that it's 2:00 pm on Saturday, and there's only 1 car in the parking lot. For reference, people start lining up at 0800 on Saturday to await Franklin's 1030 opening. Anyway, I walked in and ordered a side of ribs. Its called a rack where I come from, but come to find out, improper vernacular was the least of my worries. After placing my order,, the very nice young lady said "that'll be $26 and change ". Mind you, I ordered just ribs; no drink, no sides, and apparently no moisture. A little pricey, but I thought, these must be some great ribs. I paid, thanked the young lady, and jumped back in my truck to continue my trip. Looking forward to smashing some swine once I got settled and back on cruise control, I set them in the seat beside me and got back up to speed on 55 N. Once I was away from traffic and able to keep it between the lines with a little help from my left knee, I opened the box to see what $26 got you in Missouri. When I saw what was in the box, disappointed doesn't even come close to describing how I felt. I actually felt like I had been cheated. I guess I could have taken them back, but I don't think they are aware of how far off the mark they truly are. I feel kinda sorry for them. The owner was standing right there when I asked them to slice them, since will eat them on the road. He actually let them serve me that garbage. I've had beef jerky and biltong juicier than those ribs. You literally could not tell if you were chewing on meat or bone. Pathetic. The fact that they have the audacity to charge $26 for that garbage is remarkable. If that is what passes for "the best ribs in town " in Missouri, you guys are sadly mistaken. You'll run these imposters out of town if you...
Read moreI've been to 100 or more different barbecue restaurants. Each one is unique and memorable. Some in a good way, and some not. My husband reminded me that 30 yrs ago we ate at Chubbys and I have no memory of it. We arrive and enter the front door and set at a table for two with a view of the large counter where to-go orders are taken and picked up. Our waitress arrives with a menu and leaves after taking our drink order. I'm looking around, and it really just is very plain and all wood on the inside, almost like it's a storage building that's been turned into a restaurant. There is a larger room thru a doorway that seats maybe 75 people, maybe a little more. The waitress comes and takes our order, letting us know that they are out of several different varieties of meat. So I settle for the chicken Swiss bacon sandwich and fries with Cajun seasoning. My husband orders a jumbo barbecue sandwich with beans and onion rings. It's not long before we receive our meal. Whenever we have eaten at a barbecue restaurant, the beans have always been vinegary. But not just the beans the barbecue sauce as well. I was so glad that this was what I call a true barbecue restaurant because there was no vinegar in anything! The beans were absolutely fabulous. And the barbecue was some of the best that we had ever had. The grilled chicken sandwich was very tender, and bacon was very flavorful. The fries, which did not come with Cajun seasoning but did because I asked for it, was absolutely wonderful, crunchy, and noteworthy. Our waitress was very attentive and checked back with us every so often to see if there was anything that we needed. Upon completing our meal, we received our check and found that the prices were a little bit less than what we expected for the quality that we received. This restaurant has absolutely surpassed what I expected as barbecue is not my most favorite meal. I would definitely go back. What they lack in atmosphere they more than make up for in the food that they serve. I will definitely make this our most favorite...
