This was my first time visiting and did take out on a Friday at dinner time. I was greeted when I walked in and advised I was ordering carry-out. He was pleasant enough, but there was another gentleman, who didn’t speak, but was adjacent and seemingly unfriendly. Coincidentally, he brought my food from the kitchen and stuffed the styrofoam container in a bag, breaking the fastener. He ‘gestured’ at me, I assume to let me know my order was ready (sooner than the 15min I was initially told). The guy who took my order came back to the counter, after taking a couple’s order, to hand me my meal.
One thing that always aggravates me about restaurants- if the price in your printed menu is different than what you are currently charging, either advise upon placing the order OR keep your menu pricing current! I was charged an extra dollar for the tandoori chicken kabob (which ended up being 2 quarter dark chicken pieces) instead of the $13.99 price on the menu. To be polite and to give him the opportunity to correct things, I asked if there was an extra charge for takeout since some places do that nowadays. He said no, so I opened the menu to show him that he charged me extra for the tandoori. He pointed to another menu item that was, in fact, $14.99, but then backtracked by saying that the menu price was old…and sorry. That’s all he said- no “let me correct your bill” or “let me include something to account for the extra cost”…just “sorry about that”…and sent me on my way. I was incensed with the transaction as I had already added a tip when I ordered. I would/should not have tipped based on the experience.
With that said, the food was quite good and even made a second meal for me due to the serving size, but please have better/more customer service in situations like that. I wish the experience had been much better, but I’m not likely to return based on this. It felt dismissive and that my business was completely taken for granted and unwanted. I have frequented every restaurant that has been in that space the last few years- each has been good and provided great service. Supporting small locally owned businesses in Clarkston has been my aim, but you probably lost me as a customer. I do wish them the best, however, because the food was delicious and the...
Read moreThis restaurant is new and it's menu it growing by the day, but if it's your fist time I recommend the Platter to really appreciate Afghan cuisine and see what Darbar has to offer- it won't disappoint! The serving size of the platter can easily accommodate two and my boyfriend and I were not able to eat everything in the restaurant. The best part is that the platter comes with three selections of (not greasy, but juicy & well seasoned!) meats with traditional Afghan rice and fresh cut vegetables to complement the well-balanced seasoning. If you don't know what you want to eat, this platter is going to please and you'll love the serving size. Also, if you're a low spice-tolerance bean like me then no worries since nothing set off any alarms and there are additional spices and chili powder/flakes at the table to turn up the heat.
Darbar Halal restaurant has ties to the Afghan grocery store in Decatur* so they source their ingredients for their dishes from their direct supply where they can and you are supporting the local grocery store when you have a delicious meal here!
Hamza was managing the restaurant and with calls and taking walk in orders he remained attentive to us and made great recommendations. The seating area is small now, but check back in regularly as they are adding new entrees, sides, and beverages...
Read moreI had an exceptional experience at Darbar Halal. Per a recommendation, I stopped by for a late lunch/early dinner last week and needless to say, it won't be my last visit. The outside was debris free and had plenty of parking. The inside was clean and well-lit, creating a very welcoming atmosphere. The cashier was very patient and attentive, breaking down the components of the menu for me. I ordered the Beef Kabob, Lamb Kabob, and the Qabuli Palao, all carryout. My order took about 12 minutes to prepare. The owner of the establishment happened to be present at the time and was vey friendly and courteous. The 3 dishes I ordered all exceeded expectations. The lamb and beef were very well marinated and cooked to perfection. The veggies with the kabobs were fresh and the slight char on the pita bread was perfect. My favorite of the 3 was the Qabuli Palao. The rice portion was very generous and VERY GOOD. Almost became the star of the dish but the lamb that came with it was nothing short of divine. Fall off the bone and juicy, I was completely blown away. I will definitely return and I strongly recommend this location on Church Street in...
