I was driving through Pennsylvania in 2012 and stopped for the night in Clearfield, quite hungry. I looked up restaurants on Yelp and Mabel's had some pretty lofty reviews and decided to give it a shot. My brother in law and me left my wife at the hotel and went to Mabel's. It was tucked away in a 1950's or so housing development away from the commercial area of town. We had our doubts about the existence of this fine establishment until alas, we found it. The place was full of locals waiting for their pizzas (usually a good sign:) ), we asked what was good there to the amusement of the customers and ordered 2 16 cuts (full pizzas). As we waited, almost every customer was greeted by name (impressive considering the amount of traffic of customers on a given night. Ordered a pepperoni and a sausage. We got our pizza back to the hotel and it was glorious! The crust is indescribable, as the perfect balance of crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle. Combine that with high quality seasonings and toppings make this the best pizza I have ever ate, which includes Chicago and NYC. Always a must stop when I travel through PA.
Fast forward to January of 2015, we finally were going through PA again (from Minnesota) and have been yearning for Mabel's for the last 2.5 years. I walk into Mabel's with the owner once again manning the ovens. I told him I didn't know what I wanted as I hadn't been there in a couple years as I was from Minnesota. He then proceeds to mention that he remembered my brother in law and me and a stupid joke I made about their location. That in combination with their delicious pizza makes Mabel's my favorite restaurant of all time. We got a white sauce with sausage this time, excellent as always, and great cold the next day if you don't devour the whole pizza in one setting. This time I bought a shirt and proudly wear it as a thank you for great pizza...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreFirst time trying Mabel's famous Clearfield š pizza. What an experience, I was told that they are only opened on Saturday's. I'm not sure if this is true because the website says differently. I know how that goes. My wife called at 7:20 and the wait was over an hour, no biggie, I had to pick up more hoagies/subs from Sid's. No credit cards, cash or check only. $50 fee for bounced checks, which is pretty funny that someone would buy a pizza for a few bucks and bounce a check but I get it, Clearfield is a tough economy, this Nation is a tough economy. Gas is .40 cents more up here. So I get back to the hotel, I tried it, my wife who is not a big pizza person liked it better than last night's Scottios. I thought that it was good, mixed reviews...
