Let me start off by saying that my husband and I will never go to St Charles for dinner again. I work night-shift and I had tonight off, so we decided to go to St Charles to have a nice dinner out together. I USUALLY enjoy their crab legs, so that is what I ordered while my husband got the steak. When we arrived, there was only one waitress but we didn't think that would be an issue because there was only one other table there, with one more arriving shortly after us. We arrived at 4:40 (I know this because I sent a text message around that time) and placed our order. We did not get our food until 5:30. When my crab legs arrived, they were overcooked with soft shells that were almost impossible to crack and meat that was shredded inside. When I asked for one of the small crab forks, I was told they didn't have any because they had had a funeral and couldn't find them afterwards. How do you lose eating utensils at a funeral? The melted butter that they brought me was covered in foam from being "left on the warmer." Were the crab legs left on the warmer too? Instead of the sweet potato fries that I ordered with my meal, a BAKED sweet potato was brought to me instead. The waitress stated that she knew I wanted the fries, but the cook misheard her so she wanted to check and see if I wanted the potato instead. I declined. After trying and failing to remove the meat from my crab legs, I asked if it was possible to get a fresh order of them instead, stating the problem that they were overcooked and was told that this wouldn't be a problem. More time passed. By the time the waitress came back and told me that the fresh order would be out soon, my husband was completely finished with his meal. We had by that time been there for an hour and a half, and our drinks hadn't even been refilled and we never got the dinner rolls that had been offered to us. At this point I was ready to go. I asked the waitress to remove the crab legs from the order and just bring us our bill. After another 10 minute wait, she finally did. After swiping our card, she brought the receipt for us to sign stating that our card was with the receipt and walked away. Our card was not in the container, and I had to track her down in order to get it back. We would have gotten better service at the Truck Stop. Needless to say, we were extremely displeased with both the quality of the food, and the service that we received tonight. Up until this point, we have enjoyed Dinner at St Charles at least once a month, maybe more. Now, we will not...
Read moreMid June, 2022. Passing through town, stopped in for a quick bite in the late afternoon. Not a Cafe; it's a bar with tables in the back room.
Food: Flavorless, rubbery burgers were $9 without fries. Prepackaged bun smelled as though it'd qualify as stale by tomorrow. We both had stomach aches for the drive home. Bar food used to be a pro. Now it tastes like a processed, frozen (and then microwaved) con.
Service: Even though she was only serving two tables, the waitress was in too much a hurry to do anything more than drop off our plates; her niceness was being forced. It didn't seem like the lousy food was her fault. At least the eating area seemed clean.
Atmosphere: Must've been a central place in its day, and at carries with it some of that history. You know the feel—there are things like 50's/60's era pictures & newspapers lining the walls, from back when the street outside (where we'd parked) actually had been a train line. It's a pretty cool old building with a quaint theme. Again, the establishment is mostly just a bar, and it's located in a repressed area, so there's a bit of an old, dark, grittiness to it all. You get the feeling that this place would've been great years ago, but it's now lost its jump.
Adults note: As a guy who will often curse like a drunken sailor, I don't usually mind nasty words—except while I'm eating at a place that calls itself a "Cafe" and I can hear the local animals in the bar talking about things that would've offended Caligula. We will not be returning here on our next...
Read moreThis is one of those things where I thought there was a hidden camera. The place looks like a dive, but when you advertise Steak and Seafood outside, you expect it to be halfway nice. The wine being from a jug of Carlo Rossi was fine; however my steak (which was like 20 bucks) tasted like there had been NO attempt to put ANY spices on it (not even salt and pepper). It had literally no flavor. My garlic mashed potatoes were cold when they came out.
The best part was the 3.95 an order Mac and Cheese. I've had Kraft Mac and Cheese alot; this was blatantly a box of Kraft Mac and Cheese, with zero attempt to hide it or make it their own. Kind of bold when you think about it; I didn't have the balls to call them out on it. My girlfriend and I just laughed and choked down the food.
If you think about stopping here, don't. Go about .4 miles up the road, take a right onto Market Street, and look for Moena's on your left hand side. That place is worth the 60 bucks I spent at St. Charles...
