Down Under Bar & Grill — Restaurant in Clive

Very unimpressed. The food was the only reason I didn't rate this a 1 star. Walked in around 610 pm and no employees were to be found. No big deal, we were looking for any sort of sign that indicated that we wait to be seated or that we seat ourselves, after a couple minutes an employee came out of the kitchen and told us we could seat ourselves. I confirmed that we were allowed to sit out on the patio and she said yes. We walked out to the patio to the smell of smoke. At first I just thought that maybe the one person out there was just trying to be sneaky and avoid smoking outside one of the entry doors. We sat down and waited a couple minutes before that same person comes up to us and tells us she is our server. I chose to ignore the fact that she was outside on the patio smoking, and proceeded to order a drink as well as my husband,and we requested menus. It took her a few minutes to come back with our beers and menus, and in the meantime, a couple more gentlemen came out and lit up their cigarettes. This was when I knew that this was the "smoking section" of the restaurant. A couple more employees came out after we had gotten our beers and we were ready to order. One of them asked if we were ready to order, and I said "yeah but we can wait for our server to come back" and they just continued about their business. By now its roughly 645 and our server has just made her way back out to take our order. We order 2 appetizers and 2 entrees. She had a tablet with her, which is what I assumed she sent our order to the kitchen with. Then.....we waited...and waited...and waited. By roughly 715, we finally have some food brought to our table, 1 of the 2 entrees we ordered. Mind you, we still had not received our appetizers, but the server apologized that the kitchen was backed up and she wanted to bring us our food as soon as it was ready. So we accepted the 1 entree, a rib platter special. The ribs were by far the best of all of the food we got, good flavor. But those fries were not hot enough to be freshly out of the fryer nor the ribs hot enough to be freshly plated. About 7 to 10 minutes later, our other entree and 1 of our appetizers arrived, a small pizza and an order of jalapeño poppers. The poppers were hot, but the cheese on the pizza wasn't, in fact it was barely melted. After having 1 slice of pizza I was just ready to get our check and go, but we still were waiting on our last appetizer, which was some cheese bread; something that most certainly should not have taken 45 minutes to come out, regardless of the kitchen being busy. As soon as the cheese bread came out we sent it back to be boxed up, asked for the check and box for the pizza. As a server myself, I didnt have the heart to stiff my server, because some of this was out of her control. However, as a business, there is no reason that it should ever take 40 to 45 minutes for appetizers to arrive at table. Period. I explained my story to some other restaurant managers that I know, and they agree that is unacceptable as well. I should have left when people started smoking on the enclosed patio, because to my understanding it's illegal, but I was holding out for the food hoping it would be the saving grace,...

I went on a Wednesday night, so my experience will be a bit different than others.

The MR wings are pretty good ($10/10). The Chocolate Covered Berry is sweet and the Kentucky Mule is good as well. Both drinks were ~$6 ea.

It's seat yourself, but if you want to order, at least when there are people at the bar, I would recommend swnd8ng someone up to order, as there was only 1 bartender/waitress while I was here, but a second one came later. Bothe were very kind and patient with me, which was definitely a plus.

I mostly goto bars for background noise while reading and eating, and this place had a good amount of noise for me.

All in all, couldn't ask for a more comfortable place to eat.

All in ll 9/10 would recomend. Oy thing .missing is a menu at each table, but you can ask them or read reviews to see if there's something...

Awesome food at very reasonable prices, staff provides prompt & friendly service, great daily food & drink specials at cheapest prices around. Excellent live music every weekend with no cover. Excellent free food buffet every Friday from 5-7. TV's on every wall for any sport or televised event, 2 pool tables, video golf, darts, video gambling machines for winning tickets. Very casual & friendly atmosphere, where regular patrons & staff are friendly making you feel welcome, comfortable & at home. No tolerance for fighting, loitering, or causing problems with patrons. This is a place where a female will be safe & comfortable coming to alone. All around top quality establishment that offers something...
