Looking for a place with real atmosphere in College Station? The Backyard should be at the top of your list. Nestled in Northgate at 303 University Drive, this spot blends backyard chill with bar buzz—boasting the largest patio and biggest screen in the district, plus two outdoor bars, shaded picnic seating, string lights, and yard games that invite friendly competition. On cooler nights or Thursday evenings, you’ll be drawn outside to watch live music—local favorites like Jared Shultz bring heat without the usual DJ playlist distractions. As night deepens, the indoor and upstairs areas crank up with DJ beats and dancing. When hunger hits, Mighty Slice Pizza delivers big, affordable slices on-site, while drink pricing stays smart and flexible—perfect for groups or budget-minded Aggies. Whether you’re catching a game, chilling with your dog outside, or dancing under neon lights, The Backyard delivers versatility and energy. Heads-up—ID checks can be strict, and it gets rowdy inside. But if your idea of a great night includes great people, games, live tunes, and an easygoing bar atmosphere, The Backyard is where fun sets in—and stays.

1st time coming to the Backyard. When I arrived I gave my ID to the bouncer, he 'reads' it, gives it back to me, then asks to see my hands. (You know how some bars stamps your hands if you're 21+) well that's what I was expecting but then the bouncer miss-marks me as a minor but then once I told him I'm 21 & RE-SHOW my ID, he stamps "over 21+" 17 times all over my arms. (I appreciate his effort to fix the mistake but like just read the card or write a note explaining/ do more than just putting some more stamps on my arm.)

Then I waited in line at the bar for 30 minutes only to have the bartender tell me she can't serve me. I gave her my ID trying to explain the situation. But ignores me and continues to serve other costumers.

After wasting my time waiting, I go back to the bouncer to tell him he needs to fix this situation, and he told me to go wash off the 'M's in the bathroom and come back (greatttt idea). So as an adult who just wants a damn alcoholic beverage, I do so. BUT once I'm in the bathroom, washing the mistakes off my hands, security BARGES in the door yelling at me (I mean it's your job. I get it, no underage drinking, BUT I WASNT ) & I calmly explain the situation & insist they look at my ID. But it doesn't take till one security guard recognizes me as the "Blonde who is supposed to be washing off her Ms" comes and confirms my story. Even after all this madness there was no apology (that I could hear) just "oh okay" everyone walks away. The backyard gets a -1.3 on the costumer service score.

I was looking forward to a fun environment where I can hangout with my fellow Ags. I couldn't enjoy the time I spent here because the amount of times I was shuffled around and brushed off... it was ridiculous. I had high hopes and was let down. As a first time experience at the backyard I can safely say I know I will not be returning until I hear that their costumer service has changed for...

Local here. This place is fun. This is where Greek life attitude collides with honkytonk Olympics. Which isn't bad. And a much needed offering of variety on Northgate.

Like it's name implies, the Backyard is best visited when the weather is nice due to the wonderful assortment of games in the 'backyard.' Everyone should visit here at least once while in Aggieland. Especially early twenty types, which seems to be their targeted audience (surprise, surprise-makes sense being it is located in Northgate)...Highly recommended visiting in a group to up the fun. I swear the drinks taste better as you crush your friends at Washers or Cornhole or whatever 'backyard'-there I go again-themed game you put your efforts toward.

Downside is, IMHO, the drinks are not college student priced-a.k.a. $$. If you are looking for a more affordable place to drink , you will find an assortment on Northgate to visit instead. Regulars don't frequent this place for the price, but for the atmosphere.

In summary, worth a visit when in a group to enjoy a drink while playing a yard game. High potential for a great day drinking location,...
