It is easy to overlook glacier flakes due to it's somewhat misnomer of a name, and modest outside appearance. I had lived right down the street from the place for more than a decade thinking it was some podunk italian ice spot that was probably not even open for business, and that was a shame, because Glacier Flakes is probably one of the best little restaurants in york, pa for cheesesteaks and cheeseburgers. I am a cheesesteak connoisseur, living in Philadelphia for 5 years, I am always on the hunt for the best cheesesteaks outside philly to scratch my itch, and GF hits to spot probably better than any other restaurant in york. I can say, pretty confidently, that it really is the best cheesesteak around. You would need to travel to philly to do better. and GF is still better than many cheesesteaks you will find in philly. Jackson House in Harrisburg probably has a slightly better cheesesteak outside of philly, but in York, Glacier Flakes is by far the best cheesesteak. Its strength is in the meat they used, amazingly delicious, high quality meat. I was shocked of it's high quality, I believe it may be locally sourced meat and it is way better than it seems to have any right to be. The weakness, which puts it 2nd to Jackson House, outside of philly, is the bread. There is nothing wrong with the bread, it is good, it does the job, but I think the meat they use would be better served by a more hearty roll. Having said that, you will not be disappointed by the cheesesteak, if you are looking for a good cheesesteak in the york, pa area, Glacier Flakes is where you need to go. Nowhere else in york even comes close. However, the cheesesteak on the menu comes with marinara sauce, this is a style I have never been into, so I always order my GF cheesesteak without the sauce, american cheese and grilled onions only for me, and it is incredible. I simply cant speak to how the cheesesteak is with the sauce, if that is your thing, but a true, original, philly cheesesteak is only american and onions anyway, so that is how I always order it and reccomend it from GF. Beyond the cheesesteak I have had the cheeseburgers and some tacos, and both are very good. Again, the meat is its strength, the burgers are such high quality, local meat, I can honestly say it is one of the best cheeseburgers around as well. The burgers are prepared in a very impressive manner, like you are eating at a high end burger joint serving a gourmet, classic, all american cheeseburger. so delicious, so juicy, so perfectly seared. the cheeseburger is my 2nd recommendation after the cheesesteak. the tacos are great too, not as good as el rodeo because I like the cheese el rodeo uses more, but for real I would go so far to say the tacos are the best in the area too, right behind el rodeo. If you think about it, this is pretty incredible, it's not even a Mexican restaurant, but it's serving up some of the best tacos you can find around here. Glacier Flakes is simply incredible, delicious, a hidden gem, a diamond in the rough, some of the best food you can find in york, and it's all at a little restaurant named for its frozen treats. You can not go wrong with Glacier Flakes, you are missing out on some high quality eats if you overlook the place. I am sure the frozen treats the spot is named for are great as well, considering the amazing quality of the food from the grill, but I have yet to personally try any of that. I'm simply too obsessed with the cheesesteaks and cheeseburgers. So delicious, i cant wait til lunch time today so I can go back and get more of the best food in york. Cya soon, Glacier Flakes, thank you for serving such shockingly high quality meats, I finally found my go to spot in york for burgers and cheesesteaks. I want the world to know how amazing this little place is. I'll be in again later today for another...
Read moreI would like to start out saying that the women that waited on us at the counter was very very nice and the staff seemed very pleasant. Our visit was around 7:30 on a tuesday night and there was only 2 other parties in the store. While waiting and looking at the menu there was food being ran out to both of the tables tables and they were constantly applogizing for the "wait". This was my first clue that we should have turned around but we have wanted to try this place for a while. There was only 3 people working; a women at the register, a man cooking, and a young boy working the ice cream/icy counter. We orded our food which included a cheesburger adding bacon and loaded fries with bacon, at this moment the women informed us that we would have to wait 20 mins for bacon. We then chaged the fries to taco fries so we wouldnt have to wait and we told her we didnt want to wait the 20 mins for bacon. I also orded tacos with taco meat and a milkshake. We paid and sat down. It took us around 30 mins to get our food (still no milkshake). When our food was ran out to us the women apoligized for the "wait". She informed me that they waited for the bacon (that we told her to forget about) to out on the fries and burger. She then proceeds to to tell me that she forgot that they were out of the taco meat for my tacos. She told me that they can put other meat on them or make me a burger or something else. There was no point is asking for another meal becuase i would have had to wait ANOTHER 30 mins for my meal as my boyfriend was eating infront of me with me having no food. I did get my money back but we still had to ask for our milkshake and waited another 10 mins for the milkshake which was full of what tasted like freezer burnt ice cream. All in all the food that we did get was pretty good and that is the sole reason for my rating. We will NOT be back to this resurant. There are some major kinks that need to be worked out in the establishment. There were air ducts hanging down from missing and broken ceiling tiles, clutter against the walls including a ladder and a folding table. I understand that it is a farely new resturant but you need to know food service basics. As soon as you find that you can not make someones food you inform them. You do not wait until all the rest of the food is done before asking them if they want something else. Also give the customer what they asked for. We did not want the bacon becuase we did not want to wait so (again) instead of informing us right away about being unable to make the taco fries and asking us if we wanted to wait for bacon, you just assumed we would be okay with waiting. This is customer service basics. Make sure the customer is attended too. I understand that running a business is stressful but take care of your customers and your business...
Read moreI got the cheeseburger deluxe, small french fry, large vanilla milkshake, and a bottled Pepsi. I'm a big guy, and it was the perfect amount of food. Now, the presentation was EXCELLENT! The burger was neatly tucked into a wrap, fries were handcut this morning, and the vanilla milkshake was freshly spun while I waited. The flavor of all of my food was top-notch! I've attached some pictures of my visit to help you decide. They offer take out and dine in. It you dine in, you will only have two tables to pick from, and 4 chairs. I opted to dine in. I forgot to snap a few pics of my food, but will take some and post them to this review, as I will definitely return soon. The other customers I met were also 1st time customers. It's a great location @ the redlight next to Weis Grocery...
