I moved from St. Paul to Brooklyn Park in August 2014. Up until then, I have never eaten anything from Sammy's. We signed for the new place at the Sammy's in Brooklyn Park because it's literally in the neighborhood (it takes about 20 seconds to drive to it from our new place), and then we ordered pizza after the real estate agent left (they were very busy and couldn't stay for dinner with us). I had a 10" Create Your Own with pepperoni. Nothing fancy. Up to that point, I was a die-hard fan of Davanni's pizza, and I always got their traditional crust. This was my first-ever thin crust pizza. Well, even with the first bite, I said with a mouthful, "Omg this is just as good as Davanni's, and even a little better!" I haven't been back to Davanni's since.
So then from that day on, I'd go get a pizza to-go from that Sammy's on a regular basis. I eventually changed my regular toppings to be pepperoni, sausage, beef and onions and it was absolutely out-of-this-world delicious. I even had a special deep dish pizza sometimes they had called "Dino's Deep Dish". The first one I had was so good I couldn't even believe it. So then a few days later I had another because I couldn't stop thinking about it, but it wasn't anywhere near as good. I thought, "huh..... ok, bad day at Sammy's then. No problem". So then I tried another one less than a week later. That one was bad too - actually worse. I tried to get another one a few days later, but it was no longer on the menu. So I tried a regular pizza and it was pretty bad, at least for Sammy's. It was still quite good, but it definitely wasn't anywhere near as good as it should have been. It was just, "hey, not bad." instead of "WOW".
Then a few months later, this location closed and was replaced by a sushi restaurant. I wasn't surprised. I assumed that maybe they closed because they were having major issues internally which would explain the dramatically fast decline in how good the food was. It only took a couple of months for the decline to happen too.
So then shortly after they closed down my local Sammy's, I tried a Create Your Own from this Sammy's in Coon Rapids and to my pleasant relief, it was just as fantastic as it should be! It was just perfect and I couldn't get enough! It made me say "wow", just like it's supposed to. I've been back a few times and each time it's awesome. So what I'm really saying here is, this location for sure is still making Sammy's pizza exactly as it's...
Read moreUpdate again. Finally they have brought back good service and quality food. We have ordered 4 times in the past 3 we and each time they impressed us on prompt delivery and the correct food. The driver was very attentive to the details of your order and even confirmed the address
Update. This place is still not on part to what I have known from the past. Over an hour and a half for delivery before I called. When I called they were just making the pizza. The stated time for delivery was 45 minutes again. Poor experience again. I am not that picky about how long something takes. I am however picky about being communicated one thing and being delivered something else. From the outside looking in, it looks like management changed and for the worst.................................................. We have grown up with Sammy's in Duluth, and now have been getting pizza from the Coon Rapids store since they opened. The speed of delivery is way off. Everyone seems confused, and zero apologies for taking one and a half hours when they stated 45min. Just happens the pizza was out for delivery when I called asking for an update. Also took about the same time to deliver as if I just drove to get it. Hopefully they will get their stuff together and bring this place and name back to how they have been for years. I will not be buying pizza from them again until I see better reviews and hear they have turned it around. Very...
Read moreAfter just moving to Coon Rapids, I decided the first thing I need to do is find a new pizza place. A friend told me about Sammy's, so I went there first. I had their pepperoni amore. Here's my take.
Food: Very nice pizza basics; good sauce, good crust, good cheese. They take a traditional approach by going light and balanced, not heavy and overpowering like other pizzas. The crust was thin and hand-made, and didn't taste like a saltine. (they usually do to me) The cheese was of good quality, and the sauce was a very nice and light marinara. The pizza did have a good bit of oil, but not Pizza Hut level. It was just right. Overall it was a very good pizza. Not a big fan of the checkerboard cut, but that can probbably be remedied by asking for a pie cut. The only problem I have with it is...
Price: A large was about $18. The pizza was good, but it wasn't at that level. If it were 10 - 12 bucks, it would be perfect.
Local and decor: The interior tries to force a downtown feel, but fails. Nice and quiet, though. Right across from an awesome movie theare, though.
Service: I think our waitress was new. She was very friendly, but we got most of our service from the woman who seated us. SHE was very friendly and helpful.
Overall, good simple pizza, priced...
