I thought about walking out before I ordered... I should have...
There were a few positives to the experience, though. The fried catfish was good, the corn nuggets were, too, and I REALLY enjoyed the boudain balls... I also thought the hush puppies were a nice variation from the norm, with a richer taste than most.
Unfortunately, that's about all the good I can think of to say. I should have known something was amiss when I noticed they had modified their DIGITAL menu boards using HAND-WRITTEN STICKERS! Both the popcorn shrimp and the butterflied ones were bland. As my 14-y/o son so succinctly stated, "it just tastes like bread". Several of the fried foods were so greasy they melted through the paper bags and my 11-y/o daughter's chicken nuggets even made her feel sick to her stomach. I snuck a French fry on the way home and it was so soggy and limp I wished I hadn't. That was the only fry that has been eaten.
I have never in my life seen such a thin gumbo... It was just a handful of meat and veggies in a bowl of broth. At least it didn't taste like it looked - like dirty dishwater.
If it had been 35 or 40 bucks for the 4 of us, it might not have been so disappointing, but it was over 50! Even worse is I'm still hungry!
If I ever decide to give it a second chance, I'll probably just get catfish and boudain balls... But probably not... I'll just have to keep looking for a good Cajun place on the north side of town...
In short, if you like overpriced, greasy fried foods and thin soup called "gumbo", this place...
Read moreOK, so I went to get some chow. I saw this place on google maps and thought "why not". I drove over there and noticed the lot was empty. Ok, NBD with COVID and all. I did notice it's a bit run down. So is the neighborhood so judge not right? I go in and there are signs about the restroom being down. Okay, we had a big freeze so again, judge not. I ordered and while I waited for food that was prompt and fresh, I noticed the homeless eyeballing my truck. Turns out that was the least of my worries. One fellow came in and was drooling heavily and started panhandling right there in the restaurant. He was not too aggressive but persistent. He eventually took no for an answer and left. I noticed that when he entered, the staff went into the back of the store and stayed out of it. I can totally understand that from the very young ladies that were working behind the counter. I don't get how adult men can let that roll in their establishment. Most likely they know better and don't want to die at a minimum wage job. I do have to say that I immediately regretted leaving my side arm in the truck. It could have gone either way. As he left he kept circling back and forth from the door to my truck. Clearly he was debating no good. As soon as he cleared the path to my truck I grabbed my grub and left. The more I thought about it the less I wanted to eat anything they had. I tossed it. So, no I do not recommend going anywhere near this place. Darn sure not un-armed....
Read moreI'll hold at a 1 STAR due to SERVICE until TJ's can sort out their "website" for online orders and how to speak to customers. I placed an online order through "Seamless", which is an extension of "Grub Hub". I proceeded to arrive at the location and was made to feel stupid from the moment I stated I was there to pick up an order. I showed the employee the order, how I made it and then asked if they can go ahead and start making it. I was told multiple times that they do not offer order through "Seamless", even though it is an available option. He went to grab the manager, who immediately came out of the gate hot and told me they don't have a website or an order for me. I proceeded to pull it up and show him he does have a way to place online orders and that I had done so and I just wanted my food. He proceeded to tell me to CANCEL the order I had made and just make a new one with them, but the tone and attitude changed my mind on doing so and I left. At least "Seamless" was more helpful, even trying to call the restaurant to verify, but they didn't answer. I have eaten here numerous times, no issues, but when you call me a liar and make me feel stupid for something that is clearly posted on where customers go to order, that is just bad business. I'll give them another chance later, but will tread lightly on going in vs just having it delivered. Picture included...
