I always come here because the food and service is fantastic--and I happen to live close by. The all you can eat sushi selection is really the best I've ever had in this category, including properly portioned nigiri and sashimi pieces; generously portioned rolls, and a wide range of cooked Japanese comfort food that really hit the spot. I say "properly portioned" because I feel like what makes a piece of nigiri sushi (or sashimi) really good is considerations of not just the taste, and the "lack of fishiness" of sushi, but the texture, firm/soft-ness, and the size of the piece. For someone like me, that means not having to cut the pieces of nigiri into smaller bite-sized pieces--I want it to just fit easily so that I can really taste it for all it's worth.
As many have commented here, the fish tastes fresh, and does not have that "bad-fishiness" often feared by some newcomers to the world of raw fish. The prices are very reasonable, which may make some suspicious about the quality, but as a lifelong lover of raw fish, I think I Love Sushi sets the standard of freshness and quality to this day. I always have very fresh fish here, both in-restaurant AND takeout. So if you're looking to try sushi for the first time, this is a very good (and very personably nice!) place to start a new gastronomical adventure. The mackerel (saba), which is often seen as one of the fishiest of the sushi fishes, has what I think is "good-fishiness." This also applies to their salmon. Other fish I really like here are izumidai (tilapia), hamachi (yellowtail), maguro (bluefin tuna), shiro maguro (albacore tuna).
Fish that I don't often find at other all you can eat that I really like--and which are part of what makes this place really stand out to me--are hokkigai (surf clam), ika (squid), and tako (octopus). I also love their ikura (salmon roe) sushi/gunkan-maki, as well!
Whenever my partner and/or I go there, Wendy, Kimmy, and the sushi chefs are always so happy to see us and welcome us back, and it's so comforting to be there after a really hard day at work. I feel like they really care about us as people. As others have noted, a few months ago there was some issue with some server who seemed a bit impatient with customers (I don't know her name). THAT BEING SAID, I feel like I Love Sushi really cares about treating their customers well, and I learned that they addressed issue with the rude worker there in light of what their customers say. I've always had a great experience here otherwise, so a rude worker wouldn't put me off--but their doing this has shown me that they do care about how their customers feel, and listen to what people say.
This is hands-down the best sushi place to go to for my partner and me in Davis! I'm so glad I live so close to them. Having them so close by has been part of my reasons to stay in my community since moving here three...
Read moreDisappointing Experience at I ❤️ Sushi: Forced All-You-Can-Eat and Subpar Sushi
Review:
I recently dined at I ❤️ Sushi with high hopes of enjoying a delightful sushi meal. Unfortunately, my experience at this restaurant left much to be desired. From the moment we arrived, it became apparent that our preferences were disregarded, as we were coerced into the all-you-can-eat option, which we did not want.
To begin with, the staff at I ❤️ Sushi seemed more interested in pushing the all-you-can-eat deal rather than addressing our specific desires. We clearly expressed our preference for ordering à la carte, hoping to savor a few select dishes. However, the waitstaff insisted that we would get the best value by opting for the all-you-can-eat option. Feeling somewhat pressured, we did not agree to get the all you can eat
As we started sampling the sushi, we were immediately disappointed by the quality. Not only was the sushi lukewarm, but the fish also seemed less than fresh. The texture was off, and there was an unpleasant fishy odor that permeated each piece. It was evident that the sushi had been sitting out for an extended period, which was utterly unappetizing.
Furthermore, the variety of sushi available was quite limited, and the presentation lacked any semblance of artistry. The rolls were haphazardly assembled, and the ingredients seemed hastily slapped together without any attention to detail. It was disheartening to see such a lack of care and craftsmanship in a sushi restaurant.
To make matters worse, despite our initial disagreement with the all-you-can-eat option, we were unexpectedly charged for it at the end of our meal. This felt like a deceptive tactic to boost their profits, as we clearly indicated our preference for ordering à la carte. We were left feeling cheated and taken advantage of.
The overall experience at I ❤️ Sushi was disappointing, to say the least. The insistence on the all-you-can-eat option, the subpar quality of the sushi, and the unappetizing presentation all contributed to a lackluster dining experience. I would caution anyone seeking a satisfying sushi meal to look elsewhere, as I ❤️ Sushi clearly falls short in delivering an enjoyable and...
Read moreI tried "I Love Sushi" for the first time yesterday. After reading several conflicting reviews, I decided to make up my own mind. Here's my experience/perspective. It's a family-run restaurant. The servers are efficient but not overly friendly. This small restaurant was busy with three sushi chefs preparing the roles, etc. However, the food was sub-par and quite disappointing. I'll start with the good; I enjoyed the shrimp tempura, which was hot, crunchy, and delicious, and the tea, which had a lovely sachet inside the pot. Many folks were enjoying the wide variety of Sushi rolls, but I wasn't up to it, so I can't rate them. As to the rest; Almost everything was soggy: Good sushi rice sticks together & is made with rice vinegar, sugar, and a hint of mirin. This rice was bland and watery.. & everything was served with rice, even the chicken teriyaki. The cucumbers in the Temaki wraps were limp and wet, and the wraps were essentially flavorless. The Unagi wasn't fresh; It must have been prepared earlier in the day, as other commenters noted, and it was saturated with the sauce, which was extremely sweet, The seaweed salad was very oily, and the edamame was ice cold. However, it did have a sprinkling of salt which added flavor. I have been to a few sushi restaurants in the past and remember being served Unagi over delicious rice, and the eel was warm with a light brushing of sauce. Sadly, not the case here. There is so much room/opportunity for...
