Unsatisfactory in several regards. The overall bad experience began as my group and I entered the establishment. We approached the host to get an estimate on the wait time. He said it would be 15 to 20 minutes. When we asked if he needed a name he replied that he would remember us. Another group came in about 15 minutes after us and was immediately seated. We pointed this out and a waiter came to help and managed to seat us. Our waiter Esteban was very polite. He is the only reason this review has two stars instead of one. The drinks were poorly mixed. The fajitas were overly greasy and served with dried rice that had been left under a heat lamp for a very long time. Half of the food was thrown together in a rush. The other half was already made and sitting under heat lamps getting stale. I won't be returning to this restaurant and wouldn't recommend anyone trying it. Sub par on everything except the waiter's service.

Very good Americanized Mexican food; nothing too spicy or weird to be afraid of here, even for the burger and pizza crowd. One small glitch; I use a cane and being disabled can't stand too long. The young boy who was to seat guests had multiple other duties. Finally, w no direction to wait or sit, the wife and I found an empty table to sit down. Then the host started seating other people. I let him know we had seated ourselves and he almost shyly admonished, "next time please wait to be seated ..." but rewarded us by finally bringing menus. The owner, I believe, was our waiter so we otherwise got good service. Note: Even the bathroom was very clean.

My undergraduate schooling was at Luther College and I had my fair share of meals here as a student. Driving through to Dubuque with my friend and fiancee I convinced them to stop and try it out. Don Jose never disappoints! I got a margarita and burrito. The margarita tasted great and the burrito's portion size, taste, and presentation were excellent. As a group we got queso and chips and that also hit the spot. We sat outside and the umbrellas were situated to assist in avoiding direct exposure to the sun if someone was into that (I'm pale so I was). The service we received was also tremendous and timely, so an easy 5 stars from me!

Service is just as important as the food.

My family and I went to Don Jose's for dinner. There was a short wait, but not too bad. We were seated and someone brought us chips and salsa. 30 minutes later we had to ask if someone could take our drink order.

Yep, 30 minutes.

To be fair, the food was actually pretty good. My chimi could have stayed in the fryer a touch longer, but the chicken was really good. The rest of our party reported their food was good too.

I know it was busy, but it was a Saturday and they should have known it was going to be busy. Making customers wait, for me at least, is what loses you two stars.

If based on food alone, I would have gone probably four stars. Food was good, I would return if I was in Decorah. But I am not sure I want to wait 30 minutes in a booth just to feel like our table was being...

I usually don’t go out of my way to leave reviews but for this place it’s worth it. Food is always hot and fresh and the queso is to die for. Warm and nice atmosphere and the staff are always so sweet. Great place to eat in or carry out, very accommodating for larger groups and food allergies as well. Every time I’ve had carryout, it’s ready in 15 minutes or less — even on their busiest days. Don’t think I’ve ever waited longer than 20 minutes for my food when eating in, which is never an issue because they have really delicious chips and salsa while you wait. They also include chips and salsa with carryout orders for no extra cost. Prices are very reasonable for the amount and quality...
