Two of us went to Ohana for the all you can eat lunch. For under 20.00, you can order from an extensive menu as many times as you want. The dinner menu features more options and is 30.00 per person. As long as everyone at the table orders the all you can eat option, sharing of all food items is allowed. We decided to pace ourselves as I was told that if you have any sushi left over when you are finished, you will be charged around 10.00 per pound. If you have other items left, you can take those home for no cost. The sushi rolls come with 8 pieces but there are options on the menu to get some with 6 pieces or even 1 piece to sample. Soups, noodles, rice, appetizers and dessert are available as well. We began with an 8 piece roll, a few appetizers and some vegetables. You are given a coated menu where you mark your selections with a dry erase marker. It is returned to you throughout your meal so you can make new selections. As the food becomes available, whatever waiter/waitress is available brings it to you. You have a server assigned to your table to check on you, remove dishes, fill your drink and get your orders. Everything appeared to be made on the spot with the exception of the soups, rice and noodles. Each time, we ordered some form of sushi and other options on the menu. We saved the rice and noodle dishes for last so that we could enjoy the sushi first. Everything was tasty. The service was great. While some of the options couldn't compare to other restaurants that serve similar items, overall, the food was satisfying and tasted good. I found some items such as the fried rice to be a bit mushy and I didn't care for that. The appetizers were wonderful. The sushi rolls differed in appeal, depending on which one was ordered. I thought the California roll was bland and I actually preferred those I had gotten at the grocery store instead. The unique rolls however were flavorful. The green tea ice cream was a special treat as well. I took one star off simply because I had eaten comparable sushi that tasted more authentic at other restaurants but all in all, we will definitely continue to patronize Ohana with...
Read moreHonestly blown away by the service and quality of the food you get at an all you can eat place. Everything has been really tasty, especially the nigiri sushi. The quality of the fish is some of the best I've had in Lansing. The vegetable tempura is crispy and delicious, and the fried rice and fried noodles were flavorful and full of yummy veggies. The scallion pancakes are so crisp and flaky, but (in my opinion) could use some more scallions added. Everything we've tried has been good, but the sushi is the absolute star of the show.
Some other reviews have been mentioning slow service, but that has been the opposite of my experiences so far (I've been twice - once for dinner, and once for lunch). The items we ordered started coming out within about 3 minutes of ordering, with other items that required more prep coming a bit later. The timing was actually very welcome, since it gives you a chance to start enjoying the food, and then you can move onto the newer items.
The one hiccup we've experienced has been some items not coming out when ordered. This could be due to a couple things: possibly a new staff getting used to the process (they've only been open a couple weeks!), writing may have smudged on the dry-erase menus used for ordering, or also possibly because we ordered a zillion things and they just got lost in the flurry. With the nice quick service and attentive wait staff, this wasn't a big downside for me. Just try ordering again. This is the same reason i disagree with any reviews saying the portions are small - of course they are, because the idea is that you're ordering a variety of things. If you want more, just order some more!
All in all, it's a great place for a fresh and delicious lunch or dinner - the dinner menu has some additional and more luxurious sushi options, making the $30 all you can eat price tag more than worth it. I think this may become a frequent...
Read moreFirst timers here! (And probably last too…)
Pros: The Lunch all you can eat is a great value! ($18/person). Probably would never go for dinner as it becomes $29/person. Staff was very friendly. Love the idea of all you can eat sushi. Got to try many different things. Highly recommend the Money Bags appetizer!!
Cons: We were sat next to the bathroom and kitchen so we were stuck smelling bathroom smells and getting jolted whenever they dropped dirty dishes in the bins. See my wife’s review on the bathroom two reviews down… We spent more time waiting than actually eating. We were there over 2 hours and only had two waves of orders for our table of 2 people. I really wanted to love the sushi here but it just didn’t have the wow-factor. Sushi seemed a bit dryer than I’m used to and just seemed overall just-OK. I also didn’t like the spicy mayo. Seemed more spicy than creamy when compared to most other places. And they put that on most rolls, unfortunately. Not sure if this is expected, but the chicken tempura was cold when we expected it to be warm. The no-waste policy can be quite the burden if you don’t know how big the portions are. Menu needs more pictures of specialty rolls and needs actual descriptions of the Maki Roll section. Wish I knew that the hand rolls were going to be mainly rice when compared to the maki versions.
Overall, it wasn’t a terrible experience, but it wasn’t great either. We left with stuffed bellies but not really satisfied, just like a normal Chinese buffet would do. Probably won’t be back. But I think this place would be good for most people. Glad we had the opportunity to try this...
