The Marshside — Restaurant in Dennis

I would have given this 1 star except that the food was quite good. The service was truly abysmal. We arrived after the lunch rush and decided to sit outside on the deck with a view of the marsh. The host seated us and brought two glasses of water to start. The first glass of water was served in a cracked glass, which the host replaced with a second glass of water served in a dirty glass with slime along the rim. The third glass of water, thankfully, was acceptable. While all this was going on we continued to wait for our server to appear. She did after about 15 minutes and took our drink order and we also ordered one started to share. About 20 minutes later we received our drinks, and about 15 minutes after that we received our food, which was very good, if slightly delayed in arriving (35 minute wait seems excessive for one starter). About 10 minutes after that our server appeared again and asked if we needed anything so we ordered another round of drinks. By this point we were the only people sitting outside, the other tables having left though the tables remained uncleared with piles of dirty glasses, plates and trash. I began to time the server’s intervals and another 25 minutes passed: still no drinks. When she returned she asked if we needed the check and we told her we had not received our drinks. There was no apology given, she said “oh, what was it again?”. She did return promptly with the drinks this time, though again no apology or explanation for the wait. The first drink was served in a cracked glass. The replacement was served in a cracked glass. We had to go inside ourselves to return it and get a third replacement drink. The server told us it was “hard because when you pour cold drinks into hot glasses they crack”. Again, no apology. We paid the check and then upon reviewing it realized she had overcharged us 2 of the 4 drinks we received. We pointed out the error and she returned with a new check with the error corrected. However, since checking the credit card statement, the original overpayment was charged. For the sake of $4 it is not worth contacting them, but the extraordinary inconvenience of having 2 drinks and a small meal took over 2 hours and still we were overcharged. First off I want to start this review by saying I am a native Cape Codder and live here year round. I feel that tourists who come here for maybe a weekend or week out of the year do not have the perspective on what it takes to have a successful business on Cape Cod. Its critical to make as much business happen in the busy months of our tourist season as we possibly can. I have been to the Marshside many times and I have never been disappointed. Another thing I should mention is my family and I are VEGAN and its sometimes nearly impossible for most restaurants to accommodate and have things we can actually eat. Recently I went there when we called ahead the hostess DID warn me that they were very busy and there was a good wait. My group agreed and we got over there as fast as we could to put our name in and wait. Most restaurants are like this in August around Cape Cod. I came prepared as I did understand what kind of a wait we were in for. I had some healthy snacks for my toddler, which wasn't a problem because what kind of a toddler eats a full meal at a restaurant anyways.. We hung-out on the porch and ordered cocktails. The view was INCREDIBLE. We literally watched the sun set and there were beautiful flowers all around to admire while we waited. Some of the guests were not satisfied and completely disgruntled about having to wait as long as we did. I absolutely did not feel the same way. I was so very impressed by the staff keeping their cool and apologizing to the guests who were complaining. I spoke to the delightful ladies at the hostess stand who were rushing around doing their absolute best to seat everyone and make everyone comfortable. Living here as I do, I totally knew that we would have a long wait and this place was PACKED!! These people did the best they could to get everyone in and out as quickly and efficiently as they could. Even after all that work and then receiving complaints and rude attitudes they still smiled at us. I don't know that I could have exercised the same amount of poise and been as calm if I were in the same position. This is an amazing restaurant I felt welcome and attended to, but summer on Cape Cod is crazy so have a snack before you leave the house and be prepared to enjoy a cocktail on their beautiful deck and wait, like most places on cape mid summer.
