I've frequented here since I became a Dentonite in 2000. It's been a local fixture and cult classic spot, that's remained relatively consistent and unchanged through the decades. However, this was my first solo foray, and it left a lot to be desired.
I was first seated by the table right outside the bathrooms, and could absolutely smell bathroom. Not exactly winning atmosphere, but not the biggest deal. I ordered the queso to start off to go with my chips, and I regret to say it was quite bland, much milder than I remember. I'm that kind of gringo who don't do spicy, and I was tipping the salsa in to give it some pep. The salsa I had to rescue from wait staff that assumed I didn't want it? Were you going to pour my partially eaten salsa back into a vat or something? DNAlicious.
For the entree, I ordered the chicken fajita chimi, and it was definitely the highlight! Crispy, crunchy, stuffed with tender chicken and marinated onions and pepper, hitting all the right notes, with a nice bed of guac, pico, sour cream and lettuce to pair with each bite. The beans and rice were nothing to write home about, the beans reminded me of store bought, canned refried beans. Easily doctored with the queso and fixins.
My biggest gripe and what ultimately made this a fairly unenjoyable outing, and at the risk of sounding ungrateful for all the attention, the wait staff are stage 5 clingers. At most places, you get one dedicated waiter/waitress who pops in a few times maybe. I had the...pleasure? Of having I swear every employee there grill me every 3 minutes or more often. I understand courtesy and thoroughness, but I never waved anyone down and made it quite obvious that I trying to relax and enjoy my dinner quietly, eating while checking stuff on my phone. Twice I had to tell staff I wasn't done with my plates. It was 5:30pm, not anywhere close to closing. I would estimate at least 6 visits in my quick meal. I know I'm cute, but not so much with cheese dribbling down my chin mid bite lol. And yes, I'm aware other reviews voiced lack of attentiveness, but there's gotta be a happy medium?
The price point is agreeable, my large queso, soda and entrée were about $25 total. Not a value meal, but standard for sitdown fare. I left stuffed, so the portions are more than adequate for the price. And the chips and salsa are gratis! Just maybe evaluate how Type A you feel before...
Read moreWe have been going here for years. As soon as we sit, someone brings us chips and salsa. My wife and I frequently order one of the main entrees which includes rice and beans. However, a couple of times recently, such as today, she wasn't hungry enough to eat a full entree with the rice and beans, so she ordered one Fajita taco from the ala carte menu with a side order of guacamole. While we were waiting for the food, she ate a few of the chips and salsa. When we received our tab they had charged me for my entree and her for the Fajita taco and guacamole, plus an additional $1.25 for a "setup charge". When I questioned this charge, it was pointed out to me that the menu says chips and salsa are for those eating entrees only. I pointed out that the Fajita taco and guacamole totaled about the same price as a full entree, but I was told that didn't matter. Since she had eaten some of the chips and salsa, there is a $1.25 setup charge. We paid the charge but this will be the last time we frequent this restaurant. If they are too stingy to let a "Lady" (my very special Lady) enjoy a few chips and salsa, they don't deserve my business. Their loss because even today and as usual, our lunch tab was about $15. $15 a week they will...
Read moreI am giving 3 stars because the food tasted good but wanted to give less because the customer service is terrible. I suggest all customers thoroughly look at the check before paying. I have had a problem the last 2 times I came here due to issues with inaccurate prices. The previous time, they charged me for soft drinks when we ordered tap water. The last time, my party came around 2:30p specifically said "lunch" before each order and pointed to the lunch special item we wanted. When we got the check, we were charged dinner prices. I asked for the prices to be corrected. The manager came to tell me only one of the entrees could be changed because it was the only one that was a lunch size and wouldn't even consider changing the other prices since we already ate the food. When I went to pay, he refused to change any prices and said that people commonly say they want the lunch prices since they are on the menu. I told him that when a customer said they want the lunch during the lunch hours they should give them the lunch and suggested his staff might need to be told that. He was very argumentative and gave horrible customer service. I've been going to this restaurant for years and am very disappointed with the decline in...
