Great Lakes Fish and Chicken — Restaurant in Detroit

This is one of those inner-city, Detroit traditional, "you buy we fry," fish & chicken carryout joints. This was my first visit here, although I've been to several others of the same genre all over the metro area. In several ways Great Lakes Fish and Chicken is like many of the others, with handwritten menu items offered on cardboard displays, but the food and service here was exceptionally high-quality. I had the fried catfish, which came cornmeal batter dipped, seasoned and fried to fish connoisseur perfection. It was served by a very friendly middle-aged gentleman who was eager to make sure I received exactly the food I preferred, with the appropriate and traditional accompaniment of fresh bread and hot sauce, both of which were also first quality. As a first time patron looking for well seasoned food I was absolutely smitten. I ordered butterfly shrimp dinner for my son and a chicken, shrimp and perch combo for myself with fried mushrooms as they are our favorite. Now it's difficult when getting takeout because alot of establishments that sell chicken and seafood use lemon pepper and our systems don't tolerate lemon pepper well. Mohammed was absolutely wonderful and kept a smile on our faces. Not only did he keep us laughing but he also accommodated us with substitute seasoning (garlic seasoning) in place of the lemon pepper. He also offered us samples of the fried corn which was well seasoned and cooked to perfection. Our food was very delicious, the portions were perfect and we will absolutely be coming back. I made the poor choice of coming here after work, my wife and i, and boy do we regret it! These people cut the fish in half and sell u one fish for the price of TWO. the fry were dry and they put fried okra along with my wife's fries thinking it would cover up the fact that you fave her an ounce of left over fries! I will never give you my money again. You guys are playing games with people money splitting that fish in half like that...WOW!!! and the whole time some guy was in the lobby practically begging us to buy drugs from him after we told him we don't use drugs!...
