We stopped on the way out of Detroit from. FIRST Lego robotics competition.
It was like a step into another time and place and Mexicotown is delightful! We wish we had more time to dine at one of the restaurants, but the stop at La Gloria more than made up for that loss. The pastries are fresh and flaky and unbelievably delicious. I didn't know what most of the treats were, but we've loved every one. I got a Strawberry filled 2 layer sugar cookie rather like a Linzer cookie. It was huge and maybe $1.50. Just the right balance of butter, fruit filling and sweetness. I wish I had bought more to share with neighbors at home. The churro are delicious, the donuts are "real" donuts as my son puts it. Light, moist and toothsome. In Minnesota I'd call this a handpie, but the turnovers are fantastic, too.
We enjoyed all of the Jarritos sodas we tried, and the hot coffee is phenomenal. I wish I could pop over every morning for a cup. The 16 oz glass was the best coffee I've had in a week and it was only $1.25. Nothing fancy about it, just great Mexican coffee.
What we enjoyed most was the process of. Holding our pastries. You grab a tray, wax paper and tongs. Then you walk along an aisle of cases of fresh pastries and choose what you like. There are more options than I could count. Pastries, turnovers. Cookies, cakes, brownies and more. The portions are huge, the people are nice and the process was quick. I highly recommend a "coffee break" in your travels to Detroit at this...
Read moreThe place is a little hard to find but once you walk in you are just overwhelmed by the delicious smell of bread! The whole area smells like tortillas, but they have a great selection of sweet breads and cookies. Their flour tortillas are delicious and made fresh every morning, I make the 25 minute drive everytime I am craving tacos to make my own! They have these cheese filled "tacos" you which have a little bit of sugar sprinkled on top and they are absolutely amazing! They have churros and although I wish they had cafe con leche, it's still so worth it to come here. They have so many different kinds of cookies and filled pastries like pineapple and regular apple and cheese and sprinkles and it just goes on n on! The owner is super nice and friendly and I think her children work there with her and they help in the back. So family owned, and great food, you...
Read moreI don't live in Detroit, but once in a while we take a drive into Mexican Town. I stopped in this Bakery for the third time, I honestly don't get all of the comments about how nice this people in the bakery are, they hardly speak to you, as if you were invisible, only take the bread put in the bag and tell you how much it's. I asked how much the tortillas were as he was walking away said something and was gone. I was embarrassed the way they hardly speak to the people before me. They tried to make conversation but they wouldn't shameful I won't...
